COB and Quota Adds

Can someone please explain what COB and quota additions mean? I assume this is something that happens after bid day. How does it work? Is it used is one does not get a bid and how often does it occur and to what degree? Thanks

Do a search for the details... but the highlights are:

COB = Continuous Open Bidding. Any sorority chapter that doesn't make quota during formal recruitment, or that is under total, may extend COBs. New members are selected through informal recruitment.

Quota additions and snap bids are part of formal recruitment.

Say you have three sororities, A, B, and C. 60 potential new members (PNMs) attend preference parties, so quota is 60 / 3 = 20. After "normal" bid matching is completed, A and B each match to quota of 20; C matches only 10. 10 PNMs are unmatched.

Sororities A and B may each accept one quota addition. (# of quota additions = quota * 5%, round up.) The PNMs who are accepted via quota addition must not have ISP'd (intentional single preference = go to two pref parties and only list one sorority on the pref card).

Sorority C may snap bid any woman who participated in any part of FR and did not match. (So, say Suzie Q was invited to pref by A, B, and C; chose to go to A and B; but then didn't match to either A or B. C might then snap bid her.)

And now say Suzie Q plus the 10 women matched through bid matching all pledge C. C can then also go ahead and COB 9 additional women -- even if that puts them over total.

Clear as mud?

Quota additions are for women who don't match under normal circumstances in order to place as many PNMs as possible and to discourage suiciding. To be eligible to be a QA, a PNM must rank all chapters whose preference parties she attends. Some campuses will "guarantee a bid" to women who rank all three (or two, or one) chapters after preference. Quota additions are hand matched by Panhellenic. The only women who would know who a QA is are the women who hand bid match (Panhellenic advisors), and there are no collegiates (be they Rho Gammas, PHA exec, chapter recruitment team) allowed during bid matching. A woman who is a QA will not know she is a QA because her bid day will be exactly like everyone else's.

Snap bids are also conducted via Panhellenic. If a chapter does not meet quota after bid matching, Panhellenic will call unmatched women on a snap bid list from the chapter. This will occur after bid matching, but before bid day. If a PNM choses to accept a snap bid, she will go to bid day like everyone else, and the chapter (except for the recruitment team) will not know that she was a snap bid. Chapters may not snap bid women that they released during formal recruitment, so the snap bid list will be composed of women who either dropped out of recruitment or cut the chapter sometime during recruitment.

COB, or "continuous open bidding" is for chapters that are under total and/or chapters that did not meet quota during formal recruitment
. This is conducted differently according to the chapter's needs. A chapter might start by offering bids to unmatched women they met and liked during formal recruitment. Chapters might also hold COB parties shortly after formal recruitment to meet more women and offer bids accordingly. A chapter may offer a bid to a woman they released during formal recruitment during COB.

Since your recruitment just started yesterday, don't be worrying about these things yet! Enjoy yourself and let us know how it goes.

Whatever happens, I'd recommend going to all of your preference parties. For a good example why, read littlecarebear's recruitment story.

Good luck - I've got my fingers crossed along with a prayer for a successful outcome, too!!! Waiting can be the hardest thing to endure - we wish you all the best, and let us know what happens.

There's nothing wrong with you. It's important to remember this. When I went through rush, there were 13 houses. I only got invited back to 9 after first round (I was a sophomore and yes, it hurt). However, I ended up having to cut a few later on, including 2 at pref. because we were only able to go back to three and I still had 5 houses at pref. night. I put all three on my pref. card and got my first choice house.

So - Chill! Stay in rush, keep an open mind & see what happens. I'm still crossing my fingers (& now my toes, too) for you.

Ok, so I attended theme parties and have been released by everyone. My rush experiences stops here, I guess. Very disappointing and confusing. I don't understand. I think I would be at teriffic sorority sister. I thought I did so well at themes and was confidient. Any chance anything can still happen for me or do I just cry, forget and move on.

I'm sorry to hear you were released. I know that it is upsetting and hurts (having been there at one point myself), but the best advice I've heard is to get involved on campus and not to give up if it's something you really want to do. It's not for everyone, but many of us here on GC have found our homes after going through recruitment (or informal or COB) a second time.

<<hugs>>

I have to second what AnatraAmore said. I have read stories about people on GC who found their Greek home after several attempts at joining. I know that being Greek has become much more competiitve in the last few years. Stay in touch, let us know how college goes for you!
