informal recruitment application...

Hi!

I'll be transferring to a southern school in the spring and i'm participating in informal recruitment. however, i was looking over their recruitment application online, and it says something about "current activities and honors." Since I'm a transfer student and won't be "currently" involved in things, would it be okay to list the things I was involved in at my old school and explain the situation or something? Or would it be better to put the activities that i hope to be involved in..? the "current activities" question is the only one that really lets me show myself and what i have to offer, so i feel as though i really need to figure this out.

also, it asks if the fall semester was the first semester i attended the school. with this question, if i put no, should i write beside it that I am a transfer student?

I'm coming in as a sophomore so besides the limited amount of Greek chapters that do informal, i feel like the whole sophomore thing kind of limits the sororities that are willing to look at me..I just want to give off the best impression possible!

your best bet would be to contact the greek life office at the school you are transferring to. give them a phone call. they will have the best advice.

that being said, i would list the activities that you were involved in at your previous school. i think your idea to write "transfer" is a good one.

Absolutely, list any and all activities, including part-time jobs and definitely any type of service or church activity. It's just like a resume - do your best to impress!
I hope you will understand that the informal spring recruitment will involve very few sororities - as few as 1 or 2 - that have openings to fill. If i were you, I'd use the spring semester to get settled in, and get out and meet as many people as possible and get involved in a couple of things on campus. Then sign up for the fall recruitment. Yes, being a junior going in will limit you, too, but not as severely as spring recruitment.
And keep your grades up! I think Potential New Members sometimes don't understand how important that is! All sororities have minimum GPAs. Yes, it could be the same as the rock-bottom to stay in school, but most will require a little higher.

What FSUZeta said. Your campus would know best. I don't see any harm in going to informal recruitment parties, even if it's 1 or 2 chapters out of 10+ chapters (Or maybe more chapters will be participating, it all depends on the school). Even if you don't find a fit this spring, you will at least get practice having recruitment conversations and feel more comfortable in the fall.

And AnchorAlumna, I definately understand what you mean about grades..I had a 3.76 at the school I'm transferring from, but due to dual enrollment in high school, my new school dropped it down to a 3.38, which I actually brought up with this last semester so I'm going in with like a 3.45 or something, which isn't too bad I don't think--I've been on deans list all three semesters that I've been in college and last spring I was on deans list and chancellors list. So I've got that part under control for the most part..its no straight 4.0 but its something.

I wanted to wait and go through fall recruitment but I know a few people who know girls in greek life at the school (I know literally no one at it) and my chances of getting in as a junior are very slim..especially since rush is apparently difficult for even freshman..so I'm going to go through spring. IF I get a bid but I'm not at home with the house, I'm not going to join it for the sake of being Greek..I'll try out fall rush and if that doesn't work out...well, then there are plenty of other things to get involved in around campus I suppose.

I'm going to call the Greek Office tomorrow to ask their opinion..I have more than plenty things that I can list from my old school, so I hope they say its the best thing to do!

When you call the Greek Life office, you might inquire about Upperclassmen Quota. Not all schools do it, so if they have no idea what you're talking about, move on with the conversation, but some schools have a seperate quota for Jrs/Srs.

Don't wait too long to call. Many schools are already closed for the holidays and will not reopen until after Jan. 2.

I would think if a chapter is doing informal then they are not at quota (for whatever reason, i.e. not full pledge class, older sister leaving, early graduation, etc...) and probably would not care if you are a sophomore. However, if they do not have an upperclass quota, depending on how competitive the school is, you may be looking at the same (or less) chapters during formal rush. Just some thoughts....

I was a transfer student to my school, though I ended up joining my sorority a few semesters later. If it is your first semester at the school, you should put down things you were involved with at your old schools. This shows you were an active member while at your old school, and that you want to be active at your new school, and that you would make a positive addition to which ever sorority you plan on joining.

As for the specifics on your application, I would call the Greek Life office at the school you are hoping to go to. They will have all the information you need to go through informal recruitment! Good Luck!!!
