Opinions on recruiting

Well at District last month the topic of recruiting brothers came up. It seemed that the younger brothers were primarily against the idea but some of the older brothers were open to it because some of them were recruited and have recruited other brothers.

By recruiting I mean simply presenting Alpha to men that one sees as potentially good brothers and would be an excellent addition to the brotherhood.

All in the approach

From what I have been told by older brothers (those that came into the frat around the 60's & 70's) this was ONE method that was used. I believe it's all in the approach. If you see potential I don't think that it is wrong as long as you don't sound like a your trying to sale them on the idea. Especially, since some feel that people in fraternities and sororities are unapproachable. Wait a minute...some are.

I think there's nothing wrong with telling a dude you're interested in them being interested.

I think it is a good way to get quality folk in the fraternity - - - especially at the grad chapter. I asked a guy that i know who is a ph.d candidate. he said that he always wanted to be a member in undergrad but did not have the resources to do much but go to school. he was pleased that i asked him and he will now be on our spring line.

i also find that many people are unaware of the process and only know of misinformation which deter them from inquiring.

Not down with the recruiting.

If someone wants it bad enough they will make the neccessary and persistent inquiry. After that, it's up to the brotherhood to determine if they are possessed of the intrinsic qualities which separate ordinary men from the ranks of Alphas.

There are already enough t-shirt wearers.

I don't see how you make a corellation between T-shirt wearers and presenting Alpha to people that don't know about it. And the comment on "if they want it bad enough" assumes that they are already interested.

I think in some ways we all recruit--just not blatantly like setting up a table in the quad and soliciting people to come over and hear our spiel. If I meet a lady of quality and she is not Greek, I often ask here if she ever considered it. Depending on her answer I may tell her more about Delta and ask if I could put her on our list of invitees to our next RUSH, although it may be years away.

But I see this happening more on the alumnae level than the collegiate level.

I will normally let her know why I chose Delta then tell her about our activities in the community, usually the next public event, and our national or chapter website then its up to her. If she wants to find out more, ie RUSH, then she has to take the next steps.

This more along the lines of what I would do.

I am not a member, but I feel that recruiting is kind of a good thing, because an aspirant may not be in a situation to get to know and talk with members of an organization, and at times when I see fellow peers trying to befriend the Alphas on campus it seems they are doing this to "get in good" what ever that means, instead of trying to form a genuine friendship with that individual, almost coming off as being a male groupie. But interest meetings are kind of a way to show that you want to learn, but I think like there should be like Jr. Organizations for freshmen and stuff like a Mentor program or such. Just my two cents.

Cool

Well... I think an "approved" marketing materials with "commitment agendas" would be nice for anyone who wants to join a NPHC affiliate organization. Either way, a "vote" is taken.
