West Virginia U Teke House Shut Down (Fire Code)

Excerpt from the Associated Press story ^ : at West Virginia U:

The Tau Kappa Epsilon house was shut down last week after inspectors found live wires sticking out of ceilings and black mold in some bedrooms. Nor was there a sprinkler system.

Vice President Patrick Smith says the violations aren't a surprise and the brothers aren't, in his words, totally devastated.

Yikes. Electrical problems and mold! Dangerous and disgusting. Sounds like U.S. military living conditions that have been reported in Iraq, as well as the conditions at Walter Reed not long ago.

Fire sprinklers are not required for fraternity houses in WV. Not sure why that was even mentioned in the article.

I've been in the TKE house at WVU and I'm currently in Iraq...trust me when I say that my living conditions here are a LOT better than the brothers that live in that house.

Oddly enough, they always seemed to be proud of the condition their house.

This pisses me off.. My chapter's been busting our ass for some time now trying to get all the funds for our house with little to no alumni support and it sucks when you hear about other chapters that don't give a damn about their house.

Several years ago a videotape of the (former, I assume) Delt house at WVU was shown at our convention.

It was absolutely depolorable.

Yeah, the alumni dropped about a mil in the Delt house...twice in the course of a little over a decade and the brothers trashed it within a year. I suppose that is why their alumni won't touch them and they are gone from the campus.

Not sure when/if they are coming back.
