Angry BAD DAY AT WORK!!! (stupid tippers)

Okay so I am a server at a resturant. The resturants food isn't that expensive, but still people suck at tipping. Here is how it goes in case you are confussed. 15% is standard. If the person does a really good job, or if there are a lot of you at a table, then a little more is greatly appreciated.

Here is how to figure out 15%. You take the amount of the bill and move the numbers over one place. This is ten percent. Then take this number and divide it in half, and add that to the first number (10%) and you have 15%.

For example:
Bill= $23.92
10% 2.39
5% 1.20 (I rounded up, you should too)
15%= 3.59.

See, its easy. We remember bad tippers, and the next time you come in, you will end up with a spit sandwich.

I'm sorry OP.

I gave great tips when I was in Virginia. In NYC the tax was 8.25% so you double the tax for a tip. In VA Beach the tax is 10% so we tipped 20%. I didn't even realize it. They loved us.

Most tax ranges from 7% to 10% so figure you're always safe doubling the tax....plus areas of higher tax probably also have a higher standard of living, therfore should be given more anyway...

We had a group of 35 yesterday in the diner where I hostess, and they left a $14 tip for all of them... big groups suck because everyone always assumes someone else will leave the tip...plus they monopolize tables and time...

That wouldn't work here in Connecticut - the tax is 6%, and 12% is too low a tip unless the service is really awful. If you're going to calculate your tip based on the tax - know the tax rate. (Right, Cream? )

OP, sorry you got a bad tip.

I feel your pain, my fellow server! I worked as a server for a long time! I tip very well due to that.

My husband worked his way thru university by bartending

IMO anyone who screws over a server and thinks their job is so damn easy should be SENTENCED to work as a server for a week!

Right! It seemed a little steep at the time. We gave the waitress the money and she said that she would bring us change. We told her to keep it. She asked if we were sure and we said yes. She looked so happy. We realized the tax difference later, but it was like a dollar difference each so no big deal.

Now NYC tax rate is 8.675% I think. It's very confusing with all these new taxes.

For big groups of six or more the restaurant should automatically add in a 15% gratuity. They do that in some places in NYC.

I WISH they had done it at places i worked...but NO they would much rather have a server screwed over than "offending" customers

Cream, where were you in Va Beach? I grew up there!

Sort of in the vein that some countries have mandatory military service,I am a firm believer that EVERYONE should have to work 6 months to a year of food service, retail or hospitality.I found that the people who were polite when I worked retail were those that had also worked it at some point.Having been there,I am a very good tipper. However,if the service is lousy I will not leave more than 15 % and if it is really bad,I won't leave anything. If my server is attentive but the kitchen is slow, that isn't their fault but if they are too busy talking to someone else or paying attention to the cute guy/girl in the next booth or simply nowhere to be seen and my tea glass is empty, they will suffer. We have all had an experience where the service was just plain crappy. If the service is exceptional,I leave a really good tip and I will tell the manager how wonderfult the experience is.It goes both ways.

I am sorry that you are having a bad day.I do hope it gets better.

You have to give me real f*cked up service to get less than 15%...
Usually if that is the case, I get a manager involved. Thankfully that hasn't happened in about 2 years.

And my fiance (now husband) and I left him nothing...and even though he treated me shabbily, I almost felt guilty for stiffing him

Trust me if i tell you the story, you would see why he deserved to be stiffed

I was visited Virginia Beach for a week before Labor Day last year with my two sisters. I stayed at the Clarion Resort on Atlantic Ave. We had a balcony right on the beach which was so beautiful. Unfortunately, it rained everyday that we were there, but we still did a lot of sightseeing. We took a boat tour. I really like your hometown. I want to visit again when there is no rain.

Three years ago, I went to Washington, DC for a conference. However, we stayed at a hotel in Crystal City, Virginia. We had most of our breakfasts at the hotel's restaurant. We got stuck with a waitress who screwed up the order and had an attitude problem. My dad refused to tip her and we complained about it when we filled out the survey at the end of our stay. Luckily we had our last two breakfasts at a nearby sports bar which was much better than that awful place.

The only time I go below fifteen percent is if I receive rude service and it’s typically no tip. I’ve waited tables and I know the deal I can tell if a servers section is weeded or if it really is the kitchens fault. The only thing that really irritates me is when the server plays the disappearing act. If I only see you to take my order and someone else runs the food for you and then you finally show up when the bill arrives I’m not to happy.
