Laying Out
Does anyone use a certain kind of suntan lotion that really seems to work? Preferably with some SPF in it...no baby oil & iodine, please!

Hey Fly-A-Kite...
Sorry to sound all preachy....but instead of laying out in the sun and damaging your skin (plus the horrible possiblity of skin cancer), why not use a self-tanner instead??
*stepping off soapbox now* LOL

Hey CRMSNTiDEGRL717!!
Well, for me, Self-tanners are either a hit or a miss for me. REcently I bought Coppertone Endless Summer and it's awesome!!! NO streaks (no matter how hard you try, LOL), beautiful golden color...
Only problem I have with it is that I'm not patient enough (going around clothes-less for 30 minutes is not very fun) and that sometimes I just don't have the time (though it doesn't take that long)! So I usually reserve STs for special occasions.
But compared to other STs, Coppertone Endless Summer, IMO, is the best!!!
If anyone wants application tips, feel free to ask me and I'll post 'em!! Also check out www.sunless.com , it's a WONDERFUL site totally devoted to STs!! Has tips, a messageboard, and pictures of people wearing different STs! It's great! Hope that helps!!

Hey CRMSNTiDEGRL717 again!
which STs did you try? Also, Neutrogena's Foams are great...but unfortunately they only have 2 colors: Deep and Extra Deep. It didn't streak at all for me...but the color looked unnatural. Also, it broke me out on my face!

Ya know, I have a coupon for that Endless Summer self tanner...I think I'm going to go ahead & try it! Newbie-what is your skin tone like? Do you think it would look OK on someone with a medium skin tone? Anyway, I'm gonna go buy some tomorrow & I'll let everyone know how it turns out
And, 30 minutes of being clothes-less sounds a lot better than 2 hours of being out in the hot sun!

Hey there Fly-A-Kite!!
If you haven't used STs before, I really recommend you going onto that www.sunless.com site that I mentioned...it's relaly helpful to do some reading!! (About how to apply, etc.)
My skin tone is a light-to-medium yellow skintone (I'm Asian american if it helps any). I think it would look great with your medium skintone!! I use "Dark" which is fine for me, or if you want a more natural one, use the "Light to medium" color. (Though Dark is relaly natural.)
Oh yes, 30 minutes is sooo much better than being burned out in the hot, hot (not to mention damaging!) sun!!!!
Keep us posted!! P.S.Coppertone's Endless Summer is great b/c it combines lotion w/the ST...so it makes for smoother (i.e., streakless!) application!! Just make sure not to apply too much to one area (be consistent)....ALSO, be careful around the hairline, and Really BLEND, BLEND, BLEND!! And also, use a Q-tip around your nostrils, ears, and around the eye brows to kinda "feather" out the ST...so it blends (sometimes the ST can gather around those areas). ALSO, put a coat of Vaseline (petroleum jelly) on your eyebrows and on your lips--othewsie the ST will tan that, which is totally unnatural!
(BTW, I learned these tips from Allure mag.)

OH! and after you are done, do NOT, I repeat--do NOT touch the parts where you have STed, till it has dried (to be safe, don't touch for about an hour?) AND, wear loose clothing when you are done (AFTER the ST has dried!!!!)
ALSO--to get rid of orange palms--rinse occasionally (ever 10 minutes) throroughly (rigorously!!) with soap and water. Be carefl not to splash the water onto your wrists, if you have STed that area!! (otherwise it will leave splotches)
Sorry so long, and all this is covered in sunless.com!

Its always a good idea to do a patch test first. I tried Coppertone Endless Summer recently and ended up with the worst hives ever! They lasted several days. Haven't been that itchy since I had the chicken pox . I guess I'm doomed to remain pasty forever!

Aww greeklawgirl ,
I'm sorry about your hives . But for the record--I have SOOOO sensitive skin...almost everything breaks me out/rashes me out. This hasn't! But be sure to do a patch test (inside your elbow is the best spot)! But greeklawgirl, don't give up on STs--I'm sure one of them MUST work for you!!!!

hey fly-a-kite,
i am a life guard and i can honest to god tell you first hand how terrible the sun is for your skin. i wear an spf of 30 EVERYDAY all over and i am still scared of what my skin is going to look like in 10 years. i have to go to a dermatologist at the end of the season to check my skin for things that could potentially lead to cancer...scary. the other girls are giving you some great advice...stick with a sunless tanner, i have used estee lauder and it worker very well. it should have for $30!!!

Hey Liz!@!! Yes, you should definitely check out that website--it's sooo great for information!! It's really cool to see pics too, to see which STs give which kind of effects. Just know that Au Courant (a brand that is ALWAYS talked about on that website), can only be sold through a website. But there's info on that, too, in the website (they have the "best drugstore STs," the best dept store STS, the best online, etc.).
Have fun there!!! And maybe soon I'll be non-lazy enough that I"ll actually type some more tips out for all you guys!! I have been lucky with STs I guess!

I'm pretty pasty, but I'd rather be white than wrinkled! I'm extremely fair and just don't handle the sun well. Tanning for me is just not something that happens.
Usually I use Neutrogena sunless tanner on my legs to give them a bit of color. The rest of my body has more color than my legs which have been in jeans all winter. It works pretty well

Did you all know that a lot of salons offer self tanner application as one of their services? It's great; they exfoliate and moisturize you first and then they apply the tanner. No streaks or globs of color; it ends up looking natural and so much nicer than I can get it myself! It's a bit pricey (around here it's about $50 at most places) but definitely worth it if you want to look your best for a special occasion
