RICHMOND, Va. - Oliver W. Hill, a civil rights lawyer who was at the front of the legal effort that desegregated public schools, has died at age 100, a family friend said.
Hill died peacefully Sunday at his home during breakfast, said Joseph Morrissey, a friend of the Hill family.
In 1954, he was part of a series of lawsuits against racially segregated public schools that became the Brown v. Board of Education decision, which changed America's society and touched off a wrenching period for the nation.
In 1940, Hill won his first civil rights case in Virginia, one that required equal pay for black and white teachers.
Eight years later, he was the first black elected to Richmond's City Council since Reconstruction. A lawsuit argued by Hill in 1951 on behalf of high school students protesting deplorable conditions of their Farmville high school became one of five cases decided under the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark

Thanks for posting this.... I was wondering what his fraternal affiliation was when I heard the news this morning. May he rest in peace.

Yes, a chapter in African American history has just died--literally! Although blind and bound to a wheelchair, Brother Hill was active in the civil rights arena until his death. The gains we've made--which many younger people don't really appreciate and understand now--through the grace of God, is directly related to the fearless and tireless efforts of men and women like the Oliver Hills of our community. We aren't where are b/c times changed or people just got nicer and more progressive. People sacrificed and put their lives on the line for us now to "swagger" and "pop our collars, etc." I'd better stop, I'll start to preach!

When I worked at the ACLU of MN, a coworker and I put together an online study guide of Brown v. Board of Education on the website for the 50th anniversary. Yes, Oliver Hill was quite remarkable.
