University of Washington Fall 08
It's finally over and I can now reveal the results. We put our daughter on a plane to Seattle last Sunday and I've been hanging out by the phone ever since.
We were able to get 6 recs from people who knew her to the 16 Groups at Washington. They sent out resumes to people they knew in other groups, but we never heard back from any of them. I suppose some could have sent them in without contacting us, but I doubt it
The first two days are open houses where they visit all sixteen groups. She had divided the houses into 4 she really liked, 6 she liked and 6 she wasn't feeling, but would be willing to visit and see. The first invites are for house tours. She received 6 invitations to house tours. She had recs for two of the six, the other four recs dropped her. THe six were comprised of 1 from the loved column, 2 from the liked and three from the wasn't feeling. Previous GCers had received bids with 8 and 10 invites, would 6 be enough? Six to eight is what they say average is, but her roommate got all ten.
The first day of house tours she visited two houses and it was nice. The next day she visited the other four houses and the order was the worst! She started in the farthest south and east of her list for house 1 and then went to the farthest North and West of the list to house 2. House 3 was right by house 1 and house 4 was of course by house 2. Her free slot was last. She said she felt quite grubby by then.
After I talked to her each morning I would think, she sounds great! And then the worries would start, but what about tomorrow? Oh, and for those who aren't familiar with UW the new members move into the houses right away. But if you don't get in, you need to reserve a dorm room. But she was on the waiting list for a dorm room, even though we had turned everything in on time. They promised they would put her somewhere.
Philanthropy day - you could attend six so she ranked all six from the day before and said she would probably be happy with five of the groups, but was unsure of one, but it would beat not joining. She received three invitations back. (One rec remaining) They were to the one she loved, House A and the two she liked House B and C. She had a great time, but house B and C had started to change places. She wasn't feeling house B as much as she had at first and was liking house C more. After Philanthropy day you could attend three prefs so she listed her three and when back to the dorm.
THe morning of pref they were suppose to meet at 9:00 to get invitations and parties started at 10:00. Every other day I had received a phone call shortly after she received her list, but today no call. Was she somewhere crying because she was upset? OR had panhellenic told them to leave their phones off this morning? Ten o'clock came and no call. First party was probably one hr with a ten minute walking time, so second party would be starting about 11:10. 11:30 and no call. Third party would be starting at 12:20. No call. 1:30 they filled out their pref cards.
Finally about 2:00 I got the call. Panhellenic had made them turn off their phones - she had been invited back to all three! She had had a great time and had listed her choices as
House A
House C
House B
She said she would be happy with any of them but was really hoping for House A.
I skipped church to wait for her call.
This morning she called to say she had accepted a bid to House A -

YAY!!!! Congrats to your daughter!
She's going to have an amazing time. The women of Mu chapter are fabulous. I've been following my friends over there all week just dying to see how it went for them, haha.

Yay! Finally a Sigma Kappa ending on GC, and Mu chapter at that! I met a bunch of Mus at Convention this summer, and they are really awesome. They won a 3 Star award, which is the highest award that a collegiate chapter can receive (basically it involves a high level of achievement in all areas of sorority life). Congratulations to your daughter and Mu chapter!

Congratulations!
I was in Seattle today and when I drove by some of the houses I wondered if it was bid day.
