Grad students and dental coverage
Hey all,
Question for the grad students... I thought I could cover dental by getting cleanings and X-rays at the university's dental school. Upon further research, it requires a lot of time (every 2 weeks) and money (about $100/month). So it doesn't seem to be worth it. I tried to call the school's clinic, but could not get through the automated service.
So ... has anyone found a good plan? I have my own medical coverage, of course.

I got dental coverage through Blue Cross for a reasonable amount when I was between insurance companies and my COBRA ran out. You could also look into Delta Dental. A cursory glance showed they both operate in Florida, but if the participating dentist is 300 miles away it'd be somewhat pointless.

You get biweekly cleanings AND x-rays? I guess if you had some condition that required some ongoing work, it would help if you could talk to someone at the dental school. I'm sure they would work something out with you.

I have to get some extensive dental work done (bone grafting from a broken jaw), and don't have dental insurance. I was advised to go with Delta Dental, and they are VERY reasonable. Unfortunately, since I have a pre-existing condition, my work wouldn't be covered.

Oohhhh, ok. Try going to the clinic in person. A very good friend of mine had some dental issues. He ended up having to go to the school itself and eventually got the work done at a nominal cost.

Thanks! What really ticks me off is that I went to one dentist, who said it would cost $7-8,000 for bone grafting & crowning ONE TOOTH! So, I went to my aunt's, just to see if that price was in line, and he said that the total shouldn't be over $3,000. That's a huge difference - I felt like Denstist A planned to allow me to put his son through Dental School!
