positive article...professor examines own prejudices toward Greeks

I came across this short article in my research.

http://search.ebscohost.com/login.as...ite=ehost-live

I don't know if you'll be able to access this link since Ebsco Host is a subscription network for libraries, so here's the necessary info:

"Making Peace with the Greeks"
The Chronicle of Higher Education
Susanna Ashton, 11/17/2006 Vol. 53, Issue 13

I PM'd you, 33girl.

Anyone who has access to a University Library system should be able to get to the article.

i'm glad that professor found peace with the greeks. i was always afraid to wear my letters the first couple of weeks to class because i didn't want my professors to stereotype me.

I looooved being stereotyped--because then I always had so much fun COMPLETELY baffling people by how un-stereotypical I was! But if I had been in a more "intellectual" discipline (i.e. other than Drama, not that it's not intellectual but we're generally known as a more eclectic bunch) then I could understand not wanting the...stigma? I haven't read the article but professors who have problems with Greeks are silly and need to broaden their horizons.

I remember once in the University Senate the professors and the administration were complaining about some rather rowdy behavior during the freshmen’s walk to convocation ( read: annual parade of the whole freshman class down a street lined with upperclassmen, upperclassmen dorms/houses and 5 of the fraternity houses the Friday before classes start). Mind you there is always a lot of shouting and drinking (and mud sliding in Sig Nu’s front yard my freshmen year) , but this last year was particularly bad. Well of course one of the professors said that it was all “those frat boys,” and the University should try to buy the fraternities' houses. Then another professor reminded him, in a rather irritated tone, that the fraternities were the ones cheering for the freshmen, not the ones heckling…and rating the freshmen women form one to ten as they walked by. To which the head of our Judicial Affairs Office added that “We should all remember that the fraternities are our friends ”. A beautiful moment.

That was a really great find and an excellent article.

I wished more professors were open minded about greek life.

On our campus there is one professor who is notorious for hating all sororities, especially a certain one. Why? Well, because apparently her daughter got booted from this particular sorority that she tends to pick on. Any women, or men, caught in her class sporting their letters are instantly picked on and graded harder. I know this sounds silly, but I've heard it from numerous reliable sources- including other professors!
