A close friend recently sent me this essay on Fraternity and Sorority badges. It's a very moving piece and makes some great points so I thought I'd share it with everybody.
Quote:
Our values and our Ritual descended to us by our founding fathers and mothers have molded us from mere high school graduates to the Greeks we are today and the movers and shakers of tomorrow. And though this transition, you will find one silent witness to your growth. Our Badge means many different things to many different houses, but we all wear it for the same formal occasions and we all place them over our hearts. Our Badge was waiting for us through our pledging, it shined on our hearts when we took our oath. Our Badge shined when the world greeted us with cheers and fresh laurels. It also shined on when we, on our dusty path, stumble and fall and are left with nothing but our defeat.
As our Badge sits as a silent witness, it also stands as a constant reminder. Many Greeks wear their Badge and think of it as just mere jewelry. In whatever differences we find between our houses, it should be our Badges that unite us. In its true power, the badge symbolizes to us our history, our beliefs, our Ritual and our Spirit. Aspects that all houses share. Many have told us that what you put into the chapter is how much you will get out. The same applies to our Badge.
It is more than just mere metal with a clasp. It not just represents our organizations. It represents our journey from teenagers to adults. Our victories and defeats, what we have taken and what we have given. It does not Judge, but keeps us on the righteous path. It is our abiding influence away from our family and close friends. Either it is the square of Delta Tau, The heart of Sig Ep, The arrow of Pi Phi or the Kappa Key. The strength of the shine of our Badges is determined by the strength of the belief in ourselves. But the gleam of one badge is not enough to fill an entire room. It is the gleam of all badges together as one that will light the way for future growth for you individually and our community as a whole.

Thoughts? Just a heads up, he's the same guy behind
The Chapter (The Office parody that takes place in our Chapter). If you like it he'll be posting more of these types of things at Fratastic.org
