well I had this message at the top of my screen:
it appears that you have not posted on GreekChat in several weeks, why not take a few moments to ask a question, help provide a solution or just engage in a conversation with another member in any one of our forums?

So I figure why not ask a good question. I moved down to the Birmingham area a couple months ago for a job. I live near the Galleria mall and am sick of just working, going home& working out then going to bed. Where do you go to meet people in this city?

I'm nearly 26 and not in school so meeting people in class is not much of an option and I don't have a wingman to go out with and don't want to be "that guy" at the bar.

Any suggestions?

Therein lies my next question. Anyone know a good Catholic Church around here? I went to one nearby and it was...odd to be it lightly.

My favorite places to hang out downtown are Innisfree and Barking Kudu. Its a mixture of the late college/post college/young professional crowd, and I typically enjoy it. Also, I've gone to On Tap a couple times in the late afternoon, and sometimes there is a good professional crowd there (Hoover one). I've seen a couple good shows at Zydeco, but I'm not sure what the bar scene typically is. I'm going to Work Play to see Robert Earl Keen next month, but I haven't been before so I'm not sure if its anything more than a venue.

I have a lot of friends in Bham and have visited a good bit, but I'm sure there are better people to help, especially regarding the happy hour time period.

Which one did you go to? I have some friends that go to Our Lady of Sorrows which is in Homewood, but I'm not Catholic, so I can't really differentiate (I was just there because I was in their wedding).

It was in Hoover, can't think of the name off the top of my head. The one in Homewood I know of b/c my brother got married there...don't really want to go there as my ex sister in law goes there.

I have to be at work at 6:30 am so happy hour is more my cup of tea during the week. I know most of the bars to go to on the weekend, although I like Five Points area or down by 280. I live by the On Tap in Hoover...it's too much of a cave, and my ex sister in law frequents there. As you can tell, not too keen on running into her or her friends.

I don't drink, but I have been to the Blue Monkey before (that was over a year ago) it was ok.

I can't offer any church suggestions, I'm Baptist.

My experience is that different church times have different styles, for lack of a better word. 11 am Sunday morning it's traditional (and maybe a little old) in contrast to Sunday night when it would be appallingly contemporary with a Life Teen focus. So the Hoover church may not be a complete loss.

Sorry about the sister-in-law thing; that would be really tough if the only places that seemed like your kind of places were already claimed by her.

There's more than 1 Catholic church! Try 'em all...some friends of mine went to the one near, ah, Helena? when it was new. You might see about getting involved in some sort of volunteer work...check to see if City Fest uses volunteers. The art museum hosts a once-a-month happy hour geared toward young singles. Get a copy of Black and White (it's free, just pick it up) and find some stuff to do. Alabama Outdoors sponsors group outings. If you're on Greek Chat you must be a Greek alum...find your alum group in town. Join a yoga or exercise class, or take a class. There's a LOT of stuff to do if you're open to anything. Good luck!!

look into some young professional organizations-jaycees, big brother/sister,etc. definately connect with your alumni group-college and fraternity.is there a leadership birmingham organization? these are all great for networking and meeting new people.

If you're looking for a more traditional church, you might try St. Paul's downtown or St. Francis Xavier in Mountain Brook.

I may try St. Paul's. I do like my mass to be traditional and not so much contemporary, thanks for the suggestion.

Is there some reason Blue angel person keeps posting the same crap every day? Its either a glitch in the system, or whoever it is is obsessed with that post.

Someone had to explain to me because for a while I wondered the same thing.

She was banned under her original name, so she created other user names. Her posts get deleted, but she reposts them.

I can't quite manage to do it, but I think the hope is that the rest of us will ignore her, and she will stop.

This post is particularly silly to me because it assumes that the OP didn't realize that he could do all those things. I suspect he did, but he was looking for ideas unique to Birmingham. It was worth posting once in case he didn't, but it's not worth reposting, in my opinion.
