A Northwest Story

Does anyone want to hear a retro story from the 1990's.

I know that ADpi had left the year before. I heard that during open house at Oregon State. I know that Alpha Xi Delta had no house so they did not do formal recruitment.

The sororities that were participating are

Alpha Chi Omega
Alpha Gamma Delta
Alpha Phi
Chi Omega
Delta Gamma
Delta Delta Delta
Gamma Phi Beta
Kappa Alpha Theta
Kappa Delta
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Pi Beta Phi
Sigma Kappa

I was rushing as an out of state student but being at Oregon it was really not that big of disadvantage as some of the plaaces especially in the south. I had secured recommendations at Alpha Chi Omega, Chi Omega, Delta Delta Delta, Kappa Alpha Theta and my moms house. But later I realized that they really were not important at all. I had doubts at the begginning but trust me I found my home and was so happy.

Im going to change the names to my favorite musicals

South Pacific
Rent
Hair
Hairspray
Jersey Boys
Oklahoma
Our Town
A Chorus Line
Miss Saigon
Your A Good Man Charlie Brown
Oliver
Guys and Dolls

Hope you all enjoy!

So is this from Oregon or Oregon State? Wasn't Sigma Kappa there in either case? I think our Oregon chapter closed in 2004, and our chapter at Oregon State is still there.

No worries. I enjoyed reading her story (especially since it ended with Sig Kap), so I am looking forward to reading yours.

Have we decided which Oregon this is? My favorite TCC went to the one in Corvallis. That chapter is closed now, but she was a ball of fire!!

It must be Oregon State if Alpha Gamma Delta is in it. I think our U of OR chapter shut down in the late 60s, didn't it? (can other Alpha Gams out there verify or correct this?)

Oliver
Wow I was totally caught off guard by the signing and chanting that happened with Oliver opened their doors. But we warned about this by our rho chi's. The girl that was paired with me was super bubbely girl. She seemed hyper. But I was stocked to not feel shy or awkward and be able to talk to her beyond the yes and no and of course their were silences. THen I talked to another girl whom was more mellow and we had a lot of things in common to talk about, but I can not remember because it was the late 90's. I remember that the song the seniors sang was cute and energetic but I can not remember it. I was not quite ready to leave when the bell rang.

Miss Saigon We had a long walk and had to hurry up and Miss Saigon was full of energy with door chants and signing. I was paired with an active who reminded me of my middle sister, but we ended up talking about sports that we had played growing up. It was intresting that I was on the cheerleading at Oregon State, the beavers. She told me that their were cheerleaders in Miss Saigon. Then another active took over, that the conversation just was flowing along naturally and she introduced me to the president and rush chair.

Chorus Line
I remember the screaming in unison. The first girl whom I talked to was just really cold and seemed really unintrested in me or anything that I had to say and this was really disappointing. The one thing I remember was spilling lemon water on me.

Hairspray
The Hairspray was a smaller house, but I was surprised by how there was 1 or 2 PNM to every active but I ended up talking with an active that was intrested in sciences like me and it was special. But their was nothing else that sticks out in my mind. The girls were nice.

Our Town
I talked to an active of our town whom was from a town near mine in Seattle and she even knew my best friend and I do not remember how she knew her anymore. It brought back memories of favorite places I use to hang out with my friends. it actually made me smile. This was the first girl who I talked to that I felt that I really connected with. We talked about shopping and plays. She said that it was fun to go to plays and sporting events here with her sister. But then I talked to another girl and she made me laughing. I remember them doing a grease presentation.

Rent
The Rent house was a little disappointing after the great time at Our Town. But I remember having to ask all the questions after the first active but the second we just had a conversation flowing. I was surprised how much energy the house still had after a long day.

I'm rooting for Miss Saigon or Our Town.

Round 1, Day 2

Guys and Dolls
The first girl that I talked to at Guys and Dolls had tons of energy. I just loved her energy because my friends back home had tons of energy with me. I could see myself doing silly and crazy things with her. Later I found out she was from California and we both found common ground of both of us being out ot state students. Then I meet up with another girl whom was just like a ditz but she made me laugh. It was a great conversation and I had tons of fun at the Guys and Dolls house. I totally felt like the first girl could be a friend.

Your a Good Man Charlie Brown
I loved all the girls that I talked to at Your A Good Man Charlie Brown. But the first girl that I talked to was silly and was a junior and had spent the previous quarter studing abroad. Then I talked to two other girls and saw then do a fashion show of Your a Good Man Charlie Brown in relations to Corvallis. But I was fun I was able to talk about music and had totally different taste then the person I was talking to. I just left this house being surprised how good the two houses were that were the first ones that I talked to that day. But I saw that the girls in this house were different.

Jersey Boys
I went into this house with lots of expecations and it did not make a good impression. But I was overwhelmed with this girl whom I thought must be a model and I had a hard time keeping a good conversation going with her. The girl at Jersey Boys just seemed like she could be nice but I found it like she did not want to talk to me and in fact when up and started talking to another sorority. It made me sad that she actually did that. Then the other girls that i ended up talking to another girl whom I had a conversationthat was good but I definitly was not in love with Jersey Boys.

Hair
Up the street to the Hair house. I talked to someone whom I had meet by being a cheerleader in Hair. I had not spent much time talking to her but I knew definitly that she had the spunk of someone that would be fun to hang out with. IT seemed like she was able to make me laugh all the time and this was the first person I could see myself hanging out with. I thought that this was such a great house. I was having fun talking to the first girl and then I ended up talking to another girl who seemed so together but she was totally not the sterotypical sorority girl. I know I could have fun here. The girls I talked to could not of been more different but I left just loving this house. I loved this house.

Oklahoma!
The Oklahoma! house had great girls or so I had been told. I got to talk to a few of them. The first girl I talked to seemed to be very scarcastic to everything that was coming out of my mouth. This did not make me feel really good at the house but that could just of been her personality. The seniors sang a song but I can not remember what it was today.

Then off to the final house of the first round South Pacific, I just connected like wanted to be here after two very long days. I know that I was having fun because one of the girls in my group told me that I kept laughing at what they were saying. I talked to a girl and she made me feel at home in this house. Oh by the way this house still had lots of energy after another long day. The first girl I talked to seemed to be someone whom I would want to be with actually someone who I could admire. The second girl was a sophomore and someone I could see myself hanging out with. The girls we just talked about stuff beyond the typical sorority stuff and the girls just seemed as totally down to earth girls. I loved loved this house.

I debated on ranking Chorus Line and Oklahoma! as the last number 1 house.

Ranking
1 Hair
1 South Pacific
1 Our Town
1 Miss Saigon
1 Guys and Dolls
1 Your A Good Man Charlie Brown
1 Oliver
1 Rent
1 Oklahoma!
2 Chorus Line
3 Hairspray
4 Jersey Boys

House Tour

At first I was disappointed that I had only been invited back to 8 houses out of a possible 9 houses. I thought I had done something wrong. Even though looking back on it I would not of been a good fit in those houses. I went into rush with no preconived notions about houses like other girls there that were from Oregon. Lets go Beavers.

I started off with hair and went there with Ashleigh from my group. I remember talking as we went. She seemed sweet and nice. But I was paired with this girl that had plantinum blonde hair. She was totally different then the girls that I had talked to the previous day. But I was beginning to see that this house was unique. We talked about disney musicals. I thought that the house was super cute and decorated really well. They showed a room called the zoo. We went in there and talked with another group that was on the house tour. I just felt like the other girl in their was someone that I could hang out with. Then the girl from the first round came up and said hi. And then when I was leaving the girl told me that she would see me in the next round.

Then off to Rent I went. I remember having a horrible time. A girl from California ended up giving me the tour and I just did not feel like I connected. It was like the girl was just a mime giving the tour. It seemed like she did not want to talk to me but it got better. Then when I was done with the tour I was talking to another girl. She seemed to have a sense of humor and I was relieved to be done with Rent. I just knew I could not see myself there.

Miss Saigon. Wow. I kept being more and more impressed with this house. I was so relieved to have a good time at this house again. was it an omen, I wondered. I remember having a great time and laughing with my tour guide as I saw the castle. It seemed like we would never end up not having something to talk about. She just seemed to be the person I could hang out with. I remember not having any lulls in the conversation with her. I just remember thinking wow this girl is like me. We had fun. She told me that she played on their soccer team. I thought that was cool. She just seemed like someone I could hang out with. I was still wanted to talk with her when the bell rang that said we had to get onto another house.

Then I went to South Pacific. I was excited with all the enthusiasm as soon as I steeped through South Pacific's doors. Wow. When I went through I talked with a few of the members as we giving the house tour. And my tour guide kept introducing me to more and more members. I just completly felt like this was a home. I was so excited. I remember talking about celebritiies and movies. It was just like a dream come true. But she was just a person that was saracastic to me the whole time through. I thought that this was just swell. Oops I sound like im from the 60's now. We talked about fun camps we had worked at over the summer and it just felt like I made a real connection in this house.

Then I had a break......

Then I went to Guys and Dolls. Well I was disappointed that this house was not quite as great as I remember but I still had a good time. I definitly had houses that were better times. But I had an okay time. The girl that I went on a tour with was a shy girl who just talked in a soft voice. But we were able to connect on some level but I totally forget it. I now understand that not everyone is a great recruiter. It was such a fun expeirience in the end ...and she was able to seem excited. But then the next girl that I talked to just seemed to know me. She kept asking me questions that just seemed to be beyond the basic recruitment questions so far.

Then off to Hairspray I went. This house made me sad that they were on my list because I deemed them as a struggeling house. But I do not think I gave it a fair share. I was so set upon not giving them a good chance. But honeslty I had an okay time but I wanted to be in a house that had more members. But I had an good time on their tour and I remember the girl giving it complemented me on my necklace that I was wearing.

Then off to Your A Good Man Charlie Brown. This house just blew me away and in a good way. All the girls that I saw on the tour seemed to be high energy and it was as if they were intrested in getting to know me. But the girls I had a tour with was totally sweet and she was a sophomore. She was just someone that I knew I could see myself with. She was their to make me laugh....I had a smile on the house bigger then usual when I left the house. Wow Charlie Brown had totally shot up my scale. I was excited to be at this house. The girl that I talked to afterwards was talking in a kids voice but she was a education major and I thought that her voice was cute.

Then off to Our Town. I was tired and excited to be here. This was one awfully long day. But the girl I talked to was somewhere where I had tons of fun. The girls that I talked to in this oddly shaped house was just somewhere when I could see myself hanging out with friends. But their house was just totally diverse and many unique individuals. I talked to some girls that just seemed like cute girls. I know that I had lots of fun here. The girl that gave me the tour was silly and I liked it because I can be silly at many times.

I ranked them afterwards
1 Miss Saigon
1 South Pacific
1 Our Town
1 Hair
1 Your A Good Man Charlie Brown
1 Guys and Dolls
2 Hairspray
3 Rent
