want to change from yahoogroups
The new yahoogroups messages format is very irritating with all the advertisements. There also does not appear to be any way to eliminate or move the items. Are there any other free/cheap group-type sites out there that does the same thing as yahoogroups (selective membership, moderated, etc.)? Thanks for any info or recommendations.

If you go to an MSN group, make sure you have lots of activity because it will kick you out and delete your group after a certain period if you don't.

MSN does not label the groups in the e-mail subject field like Yahoo does.
Google also has groups but I am not a member of a Google Group.

Smart Groups will be closing on November 30th, 2006. There is a section upon it in the top right hand corner of the website. Just informing you incase you did not know or notice and forwarning people before they transfer services.

better than yahoo / google / msn groups
You really need to look at Groupvine, then, group management software for campus groups. I hear they're going to add a way to collect dues payments soon.
Go to www.thegroupvine.com...I used it for a couple of my groups.

We still do ours through yahoo groups, but if you're looking for something new I think google groups works pretty good.

I own or am a member of a handful of yahoogroups. I too was really annoyed with the new format. They claim it's so you can see neat details about your listserve; but really, the only thing that goes there is advertising.
YOU CAN OPT OUT OF IT.
At the bottom of your yahoogroup messages (e-mails), scroll to the very bottom. There is a link there to:
Change settings via email: Switch delivery to Daily Digest | Switch format to Traditional
You will want to switch the format back to "traditional", which is the way they used to be sent. If you click on that link, it should open up an e-mail for you to send back to the server with an automated request.
Or, you can log in to your group's page on the website, click on the "Edit Membership" link towards the top, and then scroll down to "Step 3".
I hope this helps!
.....Kelly

If you have your own chapter website phpBB is a good, free program that can be uploaded to your server and allow complete, in-house management of a set of forums quite like these here.

www.facebook.com - But I have found its complicated for older alum to get their profiles up and running and have a lot of questions. Our active members use this now, so it will be easier to keep them invovled once they graduate.
