Appalachian State to Abandon Deferred Recruitment for Sororities

This is kinda random, but I grew up and completed undergrad in North Carolina. I've noticed that the private schools in NC (particularly Duke, Wake Forest, and Elon) do very well with deferred recruitment, and the public schools do well with fall formal recruitment. Is this typical across the board, or is it just a weird NC thing?

I don't think it is typical of private schools, but it's not a weird NC thing either. Both Southern Methodist University (Texas) and Vanderbilt (Tennessee) have deferred recruitment.

There have been a few factors which have contributed to the ending deferred recruitment at App. I know that one factor is the weather here. Recruiting in January in Boone is playing roulette with a blizzard. (It is ski country after all!) This makes it even harder for Collegiates, PNM's, and Alumni to attend recruitment events. They are also hoping that the change will increase quota.

I am kind of under the impression that most other schools in the area do not have deferred recruitment, but I pledged in TN, so I could be wrong.

I sincerly hope that the transition goes smoothly, and I wish nothing but the absolute best for the amazing greek women at my Alma Mater.

No, I have heard of it in lots of states. I think it's a good thing and would allow a better assessment of prospective members before recuitment began. JMHO.

Yeah, I see your point, I'm in NC, too and the weather could really make things rough. Good point.

Also deferred (and private), I believe: Penn, Harvard, Cornell, Stanford, Northwestern, Johns Hopkins, Case Western Reserve, Washington - St. Louis, and Brown, to mention a few.

Due to recent drinking/hazing at fraternities, ironically, the sororities are now deferred. I have heard of one chapter being so hurt by it. I like fall formal recruitment, that way things aren't based on reputation so much and a house has a better chance of recovering.

From the PNM, who MAY be more superficial, focusing on the status, not the members themselves, they may find this good.
