Paul Wall,
Raekwon and reggaeton artist
Tego Calderon will join VH1 film crews in Sierra Leone this week to begin work on a special documentary uncovering the dark side of the diamond trade.
The documentary, which has been tentatively titled
Bling: A Planet Rock is aimed at demystifying the diamond trade in Sierra Leone during its eleven years of civil war.
While the remix and video for Kanye West's hit "Diamonds From Sierra Leone" raised the level of consciousness about conflict diamonds within the hip-hop community, VH1 and three of music's most icey artists are traveling directly to West Africa to hear directly from the people whose lives were most affected by the diamond trade.
For eleven years Sierra Leone was the setting of mass genocide and the horrors that took place between 1991 and 2002 were committed primarily by rebels whose primary funding for their cause was the illegal trading of conflict diamonds, also referred to as "blood" diamonds.
Bling: A Planet Rock will follow Paul Wall, Raekwon and Tego Calederon as they visit mining communities in Sierra Leone, capturing the artist's reactions as they meet local musicians, government officials and children in order to hear the first-hand accounts of the terrible atrocities carried out during the civil war.
