Exclamation need help bringing ZTA to Pepperdine

Hi! So I am very excited because after meeting with the Dean of Affairs at Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA we have the go ahead to begin gathering interest in ZTA. What are some good ways to promote Zeta Tau Alpha? I know flyers and things of that sort but are there any low-budget events we could put on to begin recruiting? Any ideas are very much appreciated! Thank you!

Huh? As a Pepp alum, I can't believe the school is considering adding another sorority. There are already seven, which is a lot for a school of only 3,000 undergrads! Considering the chapters on campus have fluctuated in size over the years, forcing one to close after only five or six years on campus, this is a pretty stupid move.

ZTA is a great org. (my aunt was a member), but why do you feel Pepp needs another sorority? The seven it has are great! Also, there are still only 5 fraternities on campus, which creates some all-greek issues.

Also...

Have you already talked with ZTA? You should probably at least talk with them before you go labeling your interest group as ZTA, or yourself as a Zeta.

Absolutely. You can't recruit for ZTA if you are not a ZTA. You could form an interest group and call it something else, and make it clear that you're interest group would like to eventually become a chapter of ZTA. But you cannot use the ZTA name or any of it's trademarks to promote your group, without ZTA's express permission.

Is the Dean the proper authority to open the campus for extention at Pepperdine? or is it the campus PHC?

Ditto kddani and PeppyGPhiB. You have to go through the right process, you can't become Zeta w/out their consent. Crossing that line could ruin your future chances of them considering your group...be careful, follow the process. (I'd even re-consider your screen name on greekchat.)

That said, philanthropy is always good, find a niche event to make yours, make every-day life into events (i.e. my chapter started with Ally McBeal Nights every week, now they do another show (project runway and Grey's Anatomy I think...)) If you do Philanthopy, please resist the urge to copy Zeta's national philanthropic programs and only do those, find other causes too. Many people in the world need help.

When she says Dean of Affairs, I think she means Dean of Student Affairs, which the greek organizations fall under. However, if she hasn't already talked with panhellenic on campus, it would be wise to do so...if they are not supportive, it could make any expansion impossible or very difficult.

From the sound of her request, I doubt she has even contacted ZTA about expanding to Pepperdine. If she did, and ZTA wanted in, it would probably want to form its own colony, not absorb an interest group. I think ceiling at Pepperdine is around 80-90 members now, which will be very difficult to get without formal rush, in my opinion and based on experience.

Soo much more information is needed. If you HAD contacted ZTA and Pepperdine's College Panhel I think you'd be in a much better position because ZTA would help you and tell you how it would like to go about starting its new chapter. I'm not an alumof Pepperdine... but I know enough about it to agree with the alum who said I don't believe they're in the market for another sorority. It's a pretty small school really.

Side note.... I HEART Pepperdine... GORGEOUS CAMPUS... GORGEOUS Location...

I spoke with the Student Organizations Coordinator at Pepperdine just now and he told me that you met with him, not with the Dean of Student Affairs, and that he informed you that Pepperdine is not currently open for expansion. Each Spring the Pepperdine University Panhellenic Council gathers to discuss the needs of the community. Since there are several groups under Total right now, I think it is unlikely that they will vote in favor of expansion at that time.

It is critical to note that NPC groups will colonize only if permission has been granted by what we term the “Proper Authority.” The Proper Authority in this case is the Panhellenic council. Not Mark Davis or Jake Gross.

You may want to check out the NPC website -- there is a page related to expansion: http://www.npcwomen.org/college/c_extension.php.

In the meantime, you should really get to know some more women in the groups that have opportunities.

Loud and Clear, and only after the facts were revealed.

Moral of the story: Watch what you say on GC (especially with specifics!) because you never know who is on GC.

This is the starting point right here. The NPC has to declare a campus OPEN FOR EXPANSION. If the campus is not open for expansion, then no groups can even entertain the idea of setting a colony there.

The End.
