Abolish the N Word Project

Black Fraternities, Sororities and Other Organizations Asked to Discourage N-Word Usage Towards Children Atlanta, GA

(BlackNews.com) - In 1994, Attorney Roy Miller became the first and only person to succeed at having the n-word deleted from a major dictionary. Part of his argument has been that, if we have any respect at all for our ancestors, Black adults should be ashamed to call their Black babies and children the n-word. He comments, "We give away the same respect that cost so many lives and cost so much pain. How is it that we can give away so easily, something that we never had to earn? At its worse, the n-word is the ultimate insult against Blacks. It is simply profanity. Whether being used in a musical way, a degrading way, a comical way or an evil way, profanity is still profanity. Profanity should never be acceptable language usage for children. Eliminating the n-word from adult usage may be next to impossible; however, we can reduce the impact that this profanity has on children." Attorney Miller is asking for help. He asks that all Black Fraternities, Sororities and all other Black organizations issue a Resolution stating that their members will discourage use of the n-word against a child or to describe a child. Attorney Miller is requesting that all such Resolutions show the date of August 1, 2006, so that the accomplishment will reflect an act of unity. Every organization that issues a Resolution will receive an official Certificate of Appreciation. Miller says, "Zero tolerance towards being disrespected must be established in the Black community and it must start with Blacks respecting Black children. How can our babies be children of God and n-words at the same time? Does not such reference to the child also refer to the father? What does God think?" Attorney Miller is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He is asking his fraternity members, as well as, all other Black Fraternities, Sororities and all other Black organization members to please forward this article and write letters of support to their organizations. Attorney Miller believes that there are those who live by the motto: If it doesn't reach the heart, it really doesn't matter. "Let's show heart. Remember the mustard seed," he concludes.

I agree wholeheartedly with this initiative. Bro. Miller had an article published in the Oracle, Omega's magazine, a few issues back, which discusses his view of the moral and spiritual decay in the black community, esp. in terms of the loss of respect amongst black parents and children and the examles being set for our young people. This is the context in which he would place this discusion, I think.

I feel that this is something positive that we all need to attempt to do. Being people of habit, I'm sure eliminating the word from our vocabulary cold turkey is going to be quite difficult. I know I use it on occasion when talking to certain people. It's also in a lot of rap music that children listen to and tend to repeat. I hear the kids in my apartment complex use the N word all the time. Starting today, I will try not to use the word and encourage all around me to eliminate it from their vocabulary. The hard part will be influence from music, TV, etc. It will be close to impossible IMO. I know when DMX first came out, the N word was used by me frequently. We all have to start somewhere though. We'll see how well this goes. Good luck to all. I should forward an email to my leasing agent to see if we can put out memos in the complex to every tenant. I'll also send emails at work.

I personally don't use it. I can't stand the sound of it and what it means. My mother and sister will use it in a heartbeat, now if I'm around they'll rephrase since I am offended. I'm like no, you're black like me. You'd go off if anyone said it to you, so don't spread it.

I'm totally supportive of this. This word needs to be eliminated. I hate the word and its use around me or about me, even by other black people. I don't think being black awards someone the right to say it anymore than anyone else, and I will be glad of the day when it can finally die out. Saying the word all the time gives others free reign to believe that they can say it all the time, and that's just not the case. If I'm gonna flip out when some white person says it, I'm going to be just as hot when some black person says it. The word never stops being inappropriate.

PRESS RELEASE

ATTORNEY MILLER FURIOUS AT BLACK FOLKS FOR HELPING TO CREATE THE MICHAEL RICHARDS OF THE WORLD

By: Attorney Roy Miller
November 20, 2006

Michael Richards, Seinfeld's character of Kramer, revealed to the world an attitude that many people in the world share about us and our love affair with being disrespected. On Friday night, before a mixed audience, he referred to Blacks as n-words. I am furious with us. We should be raising pure hell with those that sponsor, support and publicize the Michael Richards of the World. This isn't just about Michael Richards; it's more about the world that we have helped to create. Black Americans seal their fate to remain at the bottom, when we allow disrespect. I have called for a zero tolerance towards Black Americans accepting disrespect. I knew that around the world, in every country, in every society and in every group, two things have always been certain. They are, those that demand respect are always on the top and those that allow disrespect are always on the bottom. This is why I have fought so hard against n-word usage.

Unlike any other race in the world, we fight for the right to be disrespected. We demand to be referred to with the ultimate forms of disrespect towards Black people. We love the n-word and the disrespect that it brings. Do we want to stay at the bottom and do we want to teach our children that it is ok to accept disrespect? I am furious, but I am probably more hurt than furious. Has God been good to us? Why are we so angry with God that we stand for so much disrespect?

Seinfeld's character of Kramer, Michael Richards, spoke with heart and with passion. He yielded to a temptation, based on a society of people that has tolerance for disrespect. He supposedly spoke of how "Fifty years ago we'd have you upside down with a f--ing fork up your a--."

This is how climates for lynching were created. This hits the hearts and memories of many Black people that fought so hard to give us a chance to live. Slavery ended in 1865, just 141 years ago. Do you realize that there are Black people walking the earth today, whose parents were slaves! We are not so far from reality that we can afford to take such actions for granted. We allow disrespect and therefore make it easier for those who think like Michael Richards to have powerful influences on the undecided.

When you give respect and demand respect, despite the situation, you have to rise. It is at that time when doubt shall rest and you will see for yourself God at his best..

In 1994, Attorney Roy Miller became the first and only person to succeed at having the n-word deleted from a major dictionary.

Attorney Miller may be contacted through publicist M.E. Posey at SelfRespect1@bellsouth.net or (312) 371-2716.

I think that there are better things that the African American community needs to focus on like health care and HIV/AIDS... but that's just my opinion...

We can probably focus on all of these things at the same time.

But the paradox is that "abolishing the N word" and having projects to do so keeps the N word alive and well. You have to make and keep something visible in order to abolish it with hopes to make it invisible one day.
