2005 National Scholar of the Year: Brother Theodore Nyame
Brother Theodore Nyame, the 2005 2nd District Scholar of the Year, was born in Mempriso, Ghana and raised in Rosedale, NY. The alumnus of St. Francis Prep graduated with honors from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY with the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry and Chemical Biology, earning a 3.81 G.P.A. Because of his stellar academic performance and leadership he earned membership in several honor societies: Mortar Board, Golden Key and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. During his college matriculation Brother Nyame was an American Chemical Society Scholar. His thesis on Sickle Cell disease earned him Latin honors at Cornell; and he had the winning presentation from the 1,000 participants in the Cell and Developmental Biology division at the ABRCMS Conference. Brother Nyame honed his research skills as a research assistant to Dr. David Golan, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Outside of the classroom and laboratory, Brother Nyame was active at Cornell as a resident assistant, member of the Minority Greek-Letter Council, and as an undergraduate advisor. He was also bestowed the New Volunteer Award for his campus service at Cornell.
Because of his exemplary scholarship, research, leadership and extra-curricular activities, Brother Nyame was admitted to several of the elite medical schools in the world: Harvard, Columbia, Cornell and Dartmouth. This future medical scientist aspires to complete the combined M.D./Ph.D. degree program, with a doctoral concentration in Biological Chemistry and Pharmacology.
In fulfillment of his dreams, Brother Nyame has matriculated at Harvard Medical School in Cambridge, MA, where, in addition to his medical studies, he has been engaged in a research project entitled, “Development of a New Murine Skin Flap Model” under the direction of Dr. Jay Austen. We salute the 2005 National Scholar of the Year for his tremendous accomplishments, and upholding the Cardinal Principles of “Omega Dear.”
