The Hospitality of the University of Redlands Thetas
So, this weekend My brothers and I were headed up to Big Bear to a cabin for a brotherhood retreat to prepare for our pledging program which begins next week. 3 of us were in the last car going up and left around 7pm. By midnight when we finally got to the point of the mountain where there was snow on the road and we needed chains we stopped to put them on and realized we had the wrong size. So off we headed down the mountain, as we passed the University of Redlands we decided to drive through thier campus and take a peak at what it was like, wow it was beautifull. After that we decided to go check out the greek houses, pretty ok compared to what we have at Whittier, then we saw it, a big blue house with greek letters and 4 girls sitting on thier couch on the front porch drinking beer, so we stopped the car, walked up asked if we could hang out for a while, they said yes, we grabbed our own beer and went and got to hangout in a warm comfortable house for a night !
Much thanks to you girls, you rock !

Kappa Alpha Theta does not have a chapter currently or in the past at the University of Redlands.

Must of been. I dont know of any NPC sorority that would allow a couch in the front of their house much less alcohol inside, drinking in front of the house, drinking in their letters, and allowing guys to spend the night in the chapter house. It's cause for high liabilities, not to mention it doenst look nice.

Well the couch wasnt on the front it was on the side, they said offically they arent suppossed to have booze there but because its still winter break for them and noone's around they were doing it anyway, they werent wearing thier letters, they were on the house, and we didnt "spend the night" as i hope that wasnt implied, we hung out for a long while and took off when they went to bed. haha

let's clear a few things up...
I'm actually a Theta @ Redlands, just wanted to clear a few things up! Alpha Theta Phi is a local sorority @ the University of Redlands, in Redlands, CA. We were founded in 1911 and currently have around 45 active members. Since we are a local organization (Redlands has no nationals on campus, besides a few professional fraternities) we get to play by different rules! For example, the school covers our insurance, resulting in dues that are only $120 a semester instead of numbers that are in the thousands. Sororities are allowed to throw parties, have alcohol (no hard liquor, only beer and wine) in our houses, and, if the girls that are living in the house choose so, have guys stay the night (gasp...I KNOW! it's the 21st century.) Now, despite our differences, sororities at Redlands do many of the same things as the national organizations do. We are active in community service, are leaders on campus, and we know how to have a good time. Our campus is small, under 3000 students, so our organizations are small as well. Only 5 girls live in our house right now, and we can usually be found just hanging out there, the smaller sizes of organizations @ Redlands means that groups are particularly close-knit. As for couches outside, no offense but we're pretty down to earth, as are the other sororities on campus, if we need somewhere to sit outside while enjoying a game of beer pong then I guess a couch makes sense! I'm not trying to be rude, but it is just a very different system from what most people have experienced in terms of Greek life. If you have any questions about our system I'd be more than happy to answer them. I'm glad that someone got to experience the company of such fun, laid-back and unpretentious girls, thanks for stopping by and you're welcome back any time!

Since an old thread is being revived Whittier does not have greeks on campus, they have societies such as the Penn Society, but it isn't greek. And they don't have anything resembling greek housing.

So you're implying that regular sorority girls are pretentious and not laid back?

no not at all! I didn't mean to imply anything about national sororities, I was simply describing some of the attributes that our system prides itself on. Obviously there are many wonderful organizations out there, both national and local, with members that I'm sure are as down to earth as anyone on the Redlands campus. I know better than to make broad generalizations about Greek organizations, as that's what Greeks are usually working to eradicate. All I'm saying is that just because we are local doesn't mean that our practices are "improper" or wrong, as a previous post implied.
