Interesting...

I wanted to share with the ZTAs, something I came across in a book - I searched to see if someone said it before - didnt see it, so here goes!

Well - I picked up this book last night because the title caught my eye (and for some reason, I read teen novels - I call it 'research' for my teaching career!) "Hazing Meri Sugarman" by M. Apostolina.

The story - summed up by the back of the book - is about a girl who goes to college, 'pledges' a sorority and the president is this nasty girl who makes their life hell. Well they sorority girls just dont want to take it, so they decide to make the president's (Meri) life a living hell.

Pretty silly, could be funny... so I picked it up. The author said in the 'thanks' there is a "real Meri" out there.

The sorority's name is "Alpha Beta Delta" so the first org. I thought of was "AGD". But NO.

Most books about greeks might have some similarities, or even mention a real org. in passing (Such as the book 21, its pretty good - they mention Alpha Phi)...

Here are some quotes from the book:

"Meri spoke. Softly. Delicately. Like she was high on a mountain and was speaking only loud enough to be heard by those far, far, beneath her. She said, "Katie Couric was a sorority sister"

Then she was silent again. She smiled that special half-smile of hers, letting her powerful words sink in before adding, "So was Sheryl Crow. And Christie Brinkley."

The she spoke even softer than before, and in very short sentences - kind of like haiku.

"Our symbol is the Crown." And then : "Our flower is the White Carnation." More silence. ""Our motto? 'Seek the Noblest'"

-p26

On p46 it mentions ABG's involvement in a breast cancer activity.

Eh, I just wanted to point this out becase it was CLEARLY ZTA's info - even though they didnt mention the FIVE pointed crown.

Ill keep my eye out for anything else! Haha!

-Alison

Thanks for writing! Now I want to read that book! LOL!

It sounds like the author was trying to put in a composite of sororities. For instance, Katie Couric was not a member of ZTA, but TriDelta, Sheryl Crow was a Kappa Alpha Theta. And we use the white violet, not the white carnation as our flower. Zeta Phi Beta and Chi Omega (among others) use the white carnation.

But, yes.. she certainly nailed our philanthropy, crown and open motto!

Before anyone thinks it...NO! I am not the "Meri" in this book. But yes, people close to me call me Meri.

Have to check this book out, when I get done reading the three dozen other ones on my bookcase first!

I picked this book up today at Target. I am not too happy reading it, and am only forty pages into it.
