Pin

After have laviliering a gf would you later "pin her" or just skip that step and get engaged. Not to many guys I know would want to give up their pin. And if the roles were reversed I don't think the girls would give up theirs either.

I will. I think it will show whoever the lucky girl is that i love her enough to give her one of the most important things to me...something I hold very dear to me.

In my chapter, one generally just lavaliers the girl. Not quite sure why, but it's probably that if you do happen to break up with the girl, it's easier to just write off the lavalier than it is to go through the motions of getting your pin back.

Plus, we still need our pins for chapter functions and such.

I agree Gmu. It maybe cool to do it symbolicly but still physically keep your pin. Its the gesture that counts right?

For us, the order goes lavaliere, then the pinning comes at the same time as the engagement. At least that's how we interpreted it anyway...so by the time the guy is ready to give his badge to his girlfriend, he's ready to take the vows too.

Yeah, my GF got quite angry when I wouldn't give her my badge. I tried to explain to her that with me being in Carbondale (very very very southern illinois) and her being in Des Moines (northern iowa) and the fact that I just might need to wear it...it just wouldnt work. Shes real mad at me but she will eventually get over it.

She also got pissed that I wouldnt (and still wont) show her the handshake...I guess you need to be greek to understand these things...

Can I just throw in that this is exactly why you should never pin a girl who isn't Greek. They can't appreciate the letters in the same way. If the roles were reveresed, I'd rather give my ASA pin to my best friend who is TKE, then my husband who is not Greek.

lavaliere

this was kinda new in '54 and I never heard the word lavaliere
until about '56. It was given as kinda "goin' steady." Then the
pin, "engaged to be engaged" which prompted a serenade to the
girl and her sorority. Then the engagement ring.
On some campuses some daring fraters purchased several of those greek-letter drops and it was said, on some places, this
would result in a pipe laying evening...oh, well, you guys are so
much more sophisticated that us old clumsy alums...

I was never lavalierd, it's not a common practice. However, when the guys who get super serious they go right to pinning. I was pinned forever ago, heh. A few weeks ago 2 of the guys pinned their girlfriends, however I'm not sure if they just received letters and/or the badge. Dusty gave me his badge on one of his first letter shirts...so not sure about everyone else. Now, the chapter has had their share of pinned-breakups which get freakin' annoying because the "younger" guys don't seem to understand how much of a commitment it is and the girls think it's just an accessory.

Questions for you guys though:
When you get married, does she wear the pin or do you?
(Dusty and I have gone back and forth and neither cares who wears it and his groomsmen, also brothers, aren't sure but they say I should mostly because I look better wearing it than he does, lol)

And....(this has been a chapter problem)
When a brother and his pinned GF BREAK UP, is she still considered a Sweetheart and basically has the letters "forever"? I'm thinking no along w/the older guys, but the newbies think (along w/their exes) think they have them forever.

Pinned and getting married

Although it's not set in stone, when you get engaged, then he should probably get the pin back to wear at the wedding.
