My mother's best friend actually just underwent a gastric bypass a few weeks ago. She had struggled with her weight for years and, after trying just about every diet under the sun, decided to have it done. My mom and I both thought the procedure seemed extreme (my mom's friend is significantly overweight, but not THAT big!), but she has already lost a ton of weight and has been happy with the results.
A woman I work with had a "gastric band" put in. I am not sure exactly how it works, but from the way she described it, it seemed like "gastric bypass lite"... I heard she had initially lost a ton of weight but in the 10 months or so that I've been at this job, I would estimate she's gained about 50 pounds....
