Your honest opinion
Hello all, I won't give you the long story because that would be too much..but if anybody ever wants to chat with me about what I'm about to post my aol name is shannieglass....n.e whoo..I have an idea for a program that could possibly take place during Women's History Month. The program would focus on the evolution of the status of women, specifically black women, in regards to the black family. The title I was going to use is "Before you were a B****: Has the black woman become nothing to us?" I wanted to use it to grab attention..I was thinking of making it a discussion forum with history thrown in..inviting the presidents of the 4 NPHC sororites to sit on the panel and women from other black female groups..What do you think of the title and the concept? Be brutal if need be..this is a survey of sorts..thank you in advanced

It sounds like a pretty good program! The title is eye catching to say the least. Where would it be held?

ZetaAce,
Thanks for the response..it would be held on my school's campus, I attend Morris Brown College..of course all women from the AUC (Clark, Spelman etc) would be invited. I just have to finish up my research, and get busy on it when I get to campus..I don't know how my spring semester will be though..I will hopefully be "striving"..but I want this program to happen, regardless if I do it or another one of my cohorts..toodles!

AUC in da house!!
I like it too! The title is especially eye catching! Exploring the "evolution" of (the perception of) Black Women in society would be quite interesting! What kinds of questions would you pose to the panelists?
In addition to having the students on the panel, I would also invite some professors, particularly those in Women's Studies to give that scholarly approach. I am a Spelman Alumna and I know that Gloria Wade-Gayles (I'm not sure if she is still at Spelman) would be an excellence resource, as would Beverly Guy-Sheftall.

"Before you were a *****"...It may offend some...but i like it...powerful...gets the point across...and grabs the attention...i would add these as a suggestion though...
"Before You Were A *****: A Time of Progression"
"Before You Were A *****: From Matriarch to Martyr"
"Before You Were A *****: Has the Black Woman Become Obsolete?"

Shannie,
Is Dr. Beatriz Morales still at Morris Brown? She left Georgia State (my alma mater) in 1996 to teach in Mo' Brown's Anthropology and Africana Studies department. She also taught grad classes in the African Studies department at CAU.
If she's still there, she'd be an excellent person to have on the program.

As a male and future resident of the AUC (freshman at THA HOUSE Fall 01)
This program sounds intriguing something I would not only attend myself but encourage my fellow brothers to attend. Not mention I gotta bring my lady who is also a future AUC resident (CAU).
Peace and Love
p.s. Shannie we've spoken b4 in CollegeClub I go by WhizDum....Small circles huh?

Shannie, Excellent idea!! If this thing takes off correctly, you could travel with it and take it to other HBCU campuses. Just a thought! I am a proud Senior at Jackson State Unversity and would love to be involved with a forum like that if it were to ever travel or even if something like this could get started here....mmmm....gets me to thinking!

Good Idea!!!
I also think it would be gould for PWIs as well. I am from one and there are small black communities at these PWIs and they could use this type of forum as well......on a PWI the black students are in a whole different world than the white students........
