Post Stereotypes

I had 22 people on my line including myself. The line prior had 28...prior to that I believe around 18. Psi Alpha, SCSU is the largest chapter. When I look at my sorors and think about the stereotypes that are out there all I can do is think "that green-eyed monster" jealousy. My line had very pretty girls on there line and very intelligent. I think the thing that gets other organizations the most is the fact that we are unique. Just on my line alone I had someone from Bermuda, Trinidad and I myself am from Germany. We had girls with 4.0's and close to that on my line. We had painters, singers, poets, dancers, etc.... all on my line. We had a beautiful line... and unique, and you cannot beat that. Zeta Phi Beta is coming up....we are increasing our numbers, and you know what, we are not losing our sisterly love, our unique spirit, and our togetherness. At the step show at Homecoming, SCSU, Zeta's and Sigma's won first place, and it was not even the first place, well, maybe it was, that made me smile and feel good, it was moreso the fact that when I looked at the Q's and the DST's, there was an invisible line that they didn't cross, same with the Alpha's and the AKAs and Rho's and Kappa's. Yet, when you look at the Blue and White Family, they were just that, a family intermingled with each other. They were not aloof, a part, or distant. We were hugging each other, we are the family away from home. We are each other's staff, we lean on each other when we are happy or sad...We are there for one another, we are the closest organization there is. No-one can beat that. So if any woman or man want to join an organization for family and togetherness, I don't understand why they would pledge anything else other that Zeta Phi Beta Sigma. I love the blue and white family. I really do...

Thumbs up

This was really heartfelt and true. It almost brought tears to my eyes. If I could, I would pledge all over again. That's just how much I love my Blue and White Family. There is one error that I must correct though...in 1998 there were 20 ladies on that line. "20/20 Vision for Zeta" I was #19 on that line. Keep up the good work and much blue love to you Myztical.

Old School HA dropping in!

You guys are living the dream of what it is all about! The Fraternity and Sorority experience, in the truest sense of the word, is definitely happening at SCSU! I was down for Homecoming 2000 and it was great to see all that blue and white love. Great to see that the bruhs reclaimed the tree!

You Knooow!!!

That's sad. To me, if you are a beautiful woman before joining an org....you will still be a beautiful woman. If you are comfortable with self then it should never be a factor. The only stereotype that seems to persist is that we are warm, down to earth friendly women :-) My Finer Sorors come in all shapes and siZes, complexions, races, religious denominations, etc...Zeta is EVERY Woman!

And even that one isn't completely true!!
We aren't all one thing or the other, our sorority is comprised of many people with different looks, attitudes, backgrounds, pasts and futures. And I'm proud of it!!!

Stereotypes? As I have been taught, there are four “stereotypes” that should identify a Zeta Woman:

...She must be committed and focused on Scholarship, both her own and others around her. She knows that people cannot progress without a dedication to learning.
...She must be fully committed to providing Service. Not just service to the Talented 10th, but especially service to those less fortunate. Not just social graces, but societal ills. The depth of her desire to serve must know no bounds and should span from health concerns to conflict management. Service for change, not service for show should be the mission of every Zeta.
...She must be dedicated to the practice of Sisterly Love. She loves her Sorors and she commits be a friend to mankind. Her oath to her Sisters overrides her desire to focus solely on Self. All Sorors are not her friends, but all Sorors are her Sisters.
...She must subscribe to fulfilling the true definition of a Finer Woman at all times. She must aspire to be superior in kind, quality or appearance in the distinguishing characteristics of a woman.

Endeavoring to become a Zeta Woman is much like the execution of a journey one might face in any pursuit of an ideal. Some Sorors are further along in their journey than others, some Sorors may be stronger with certain princples than with others at a given moment, but we are all bound by the courage, commitment and dedication necessary to aim for the highest ideals. I have been fortunate to have met scores of Sorors who are the true embodiment of a Zeta Woman and they have become my mentors as I climb toward the perfection of (Sorors fill in the blank)…

Other than the above characteristics, I don’t know how a Zeta Woman can be stereotyped by such broad categories as class-ism, color, race, religion, size or shape because there are women who run the gamut in all these categories that MIGHT have the potential to be a Zeta Woman.

Good one! Too many women don't realize that you actually have to work to be a Zeta Lady, not just ride while others drive. We uphold our Legacy, not let our Legacy uphold us. That's one thing I love about Zeta, I don't get lost in the sisterhood (because I don't allow myself to) and I pay my money and work hard to uphold my letters. To me, my letters are worthless without backup.

Bravo Shel! So articulate!
