Whah Whah Barry Bonds

Bonds may miss entire season?

Bonds Says He May Sit Out Season

By Tim Brown, Times Staff Writer

Stricken by accusations of steroid use, reports of alleged tax evasion and perjury investigations, and a surgically repaired knee that has not healed, and perhaps months from resuming his home run chase of Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron, a leaden Barry Bonds said Tuesday he might sit out the season.

Bonds has undergone arthroscopic surgery twice since Jan. 31 and previously had doubts about starting the regular season on time. Tuesday, though, he revealed that his physical problems extended beyond his injured knee, spoke broadly of the issues that have accompanied his quest for the all-time home run record and hinted at the toll they have taken on his life.

Bonds sat beside his 15-year-old son outside the San Francisco Giants' training facility in Scottsdale, Ariz., directed television cameras to shoot wide enough to capture the two of them, and told reporters there, over and over, that he was "tired."

"You wanted me to jump off the bridge," he said. "I finally have jumped. You wanted to bring me down, you've finally brought me and my family down. Finally done it. From everybody, all of you. So now go pick a different person. I'm done. [I'll] do the best I can, that's about it."

He had surgery last week and returned to the Giants on crutches. He met with team trainers for 90 minutes and emerged sounding beaten by the rigors of rehabilitation and more allegations regarding steroids.

While rehabilitating from his first surgery, Bonds had spoken of his desire to play opening day; in 18 full seasons, he had never missed one.

Bonds, who will be 41 in July, did not mention retiring. He is under contract for two more seasons, for which he will be paid $36 million. With 703 home runs, he is 11 from Ruth, 52 from Aaron.

"Right now, I'm just going to try to rehab myself to get back to, I don't know, hopefully next season, hopefully the middle of the season," Bonds said. "I don't know. Right now, I'm just going to take things slow. I feel bad for the guys because I want to be out there for them."

Asked whether he thought he would miss part or even all of the season, Bonds replied, "Maybe."

There was no indication from Giant trainer Stan Conte that Bonds' recovery would take longer than about six weeks and therefore no medical reason for Bonds to miss half a season or more.

In a statement, Conte said, "I talked to [surgeon] Art Ting this morning. I talked to Barry. His knee looks exactly as we expected it to five to six days after surgery. I expect he'll progress as most knee patients go."

Kimberly Bell, with whom Bonds had a long-standing affair, recently testified before the BALCO grand jury that Bonds told her of his steroid use, according to reports. Also, according to the New York Daily News, the Internal Revenue Service is investigating Bonds' financing of a Scottsdale house for Bell.

Although he appears to have serious concerns about his knee, Bonds intermingled talk of his physical problems with that of the strain of recent months.

He has been hounded by steroid rumors. In his own federal grand jury testimony in the BALCO scandal, he reportedly told prosecutors he'd used products supplied by BALCO, though he said he believed them to be flaxseed oil and an arthritic balm. Prosecutors believed them to be designer steroids.

"I really don't have much to say anymore," Bonds said. "My son and I are just going to enjoy life. My family's tired. You guys wanted to hurt me bad enough, you finally got there."

Previously, Bonds had been defiant on the subjects of his alleged steroid use and his career. Since the 2000 season, when he turned 36, Bonds has hit 258 home runs. In 2001, he hit a record 73, 24 more than in the previous season, 39 more than in the season before that.

When he was chosen National League MVP last season, for the seventh time, he told reporters in a conference call, "I don't owe you a response. I don't owe anybody a response to anything."

In a news conference when he reported to spring training in February, Bonds told reporters, "All you guys lied. Should you have asterisks besides your name? All of you lied."

Tuesday, two weeks before the Giants open their season, one in which the team and the league had intended to celebrate Bonds' reaching Ruth's homer output, at least, Bonds had lost the edginess of those interviews.

Asked what had led to his weariness, Bonds said, "Inner hurt, physical, mentally. Done. I'm mentally drained. I'm tired of my kids crying. Tired."

Brown reported from Los Angeles.

** Stupid Bonds. I don't care because I absolutely HATE the Giants. But I DO care because this punk bitch is on my fantasy baseball team! Way to go Barry, was to screw me over you asssssss

The Rockies can't win the division hustling in the thin air of Denver so early.

The Diamondbacks have a ways to go still after last year's debacle.

The Midgets' offense has been twacked by at least 70% thanks to steriod boy's absence.

The Dodgers suck.

Please honor your 2005 National League Division Champions, the team so pissed at how much their new ballpark sucks that it'll rally them to victory:

By the way:

Shut up Barry. You've spent your whole life making sure the whole world, especially the media, knew you didn't care what we thought of you. Now Midgets fans are supposed to sympathize because of the scrutiny you knew would eventually come your way? Give me a fucking break. I'm sorry you're injured, but you have no one to blame but yourself for the scrutiny.

Another reason Nor Cal "hella" sucks and So Cal rules " a grip"

With the injury problem, I was staying away from him for my fantasy team.

He has spent his whole career telling the media that he didn't care what they thought, so to turn around and say that the media is partially to blame for this is kind of ridiculous.

I thought he would miss significant time at some point this season, or that he would eventually lose his cool completely. It happened faster than I thought.

Newest steroid allegations

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/s...t&lid=tab2pos1

So between this book and the previously-released one, there has been a whole lot more proof coming out of Bonds' steroid use. Has it changed any of your opinions of him?

It hasn't really done much for me - I'd assumed steroid use before, and this only confirms it. In this case, I'm glad I don't have a HOF vote.

It takes a lot for me to hate a sports figure. A lot. The only time I've ever come even close to hating someone is Ron Artest.

I hate Barry Bonds. Despite his large girth, he is a pathetic little bitch who should be laughed out of baseball. STFU Barry, and go play far, far away.

He went down a completely different path than Giambi.

Absolutely, and it's going to be interesting to see what happens this season when he passes Babe Ruth and is on his way to breaking Aaron's record. The boos are going to get louder, and there will be more media members piling on to the story.

I find it funny that alot of the roiders are from SoCal

Barroids (riverside), Giamboids (west covina) , McGwire (pomona), Boone (c'mon you know that little pussy did), Sosa (compton), Palmero (East LA)

....ok just kidding about the last two

I've been to the park named after his dad & it's sad to see it so run down.

Barry Bonds is a steroid pumping crybaby bitch that needs to bury himself in a hole and die. In my mind, it doesn't matter if he comes back or not, his homeruns mean absolutely nothing b/c he's a juiced up prick. Hank Aaron will always be #1 w/the Babe right behind him.

A friend and I were talking about the differences today between the prolific home run hitters that were roiders.

Its interesting to see the alleged paths that these guys took. I'm assuming that sosa got of of them and was booed out of Chicago after that and never recovered. Palmerio stayed on up until recently and we all know how that went. McGwire took his ball and ran right away. Bonds might still be on them (haven't seen any pictures) and will probably stay enough to break the record. Its interesting to assume that Palmeiro and Bonds are going on the same path instead of retiring right away like McGwire or getting off of them like Sosa.

That being said, I am still amazed that Bonds wanted to put his hall of fame career in question in the late 90's or whenever he started using them.

That's the biggest question I have. This wasn't a marginal player making a bump (like Caminitti), or a good player trying to be great (Palmeiro). This was an already great player putting it all on the line, and that to me is the most interesting part of this whole ordeal.

Doesn't steroid usage make you mean and short tempered?

I ask because Barry Bonds used to play for the Pirates back in the (if I recall) late eighties and he was considered to be a "good guy" around town. Lots of community service, friendly to fans, cooperative with the press, etc. He and Bobby Bonilla were really fan favorites Pittsburgh around that time.

Once he went to San Francisco, it seems like that image went down the crapper and I was wondering if that possibly had something to do with steroids.

The story that Barry likes to tell is that he is upset with the way the press treated his father (Bobby, also a very good major-leaguer). There were rumors of alcoholism, and Barry believes his father got the short end of the stick overall in that regard. So really, who knows.

There are other players (Nomar Garciaparra, Pedro Martinez), who have changed their feelings towards the press/public over time as well.

Maybe it has to do with steroid use, maybe it doesn't. We'll probably never know.
