College Magazines & Greeks

I didn't want to put this in the Alumni Forum, as many schools send their magazine out the minute someone matriculates.

Say that you're an alumnae of ABC University and you do something worth sending in to the ABC Journal. Does your school put your greek affiliation in the Journal along with your name or not?

Why I ask is that Pitt's magazine certainly doesn't (they barely recognize that Greeks are even there!), nor do many other alumnae magzine I've seen.

As serendipity would have it, I got my neighbor's alumnae magazine a couple months ago. Of course, I forget which college, but it wasn't too small or too large - I recognized it immediately. Anyhow, each time a person was mentioned, their affiliation was there, too - like "Isadora Kelly (ADPi) married Quentin Dusselldorf (DTD) in September. The wedding party included fellow alumnae Jane Doe (XO), John Doe (PiKA), Heather Heatherington (DZ), and Amanda Aman (ADPi)." And it wasn't just for weddings, it was for everything noteworthy.

Does your Alumnae Magazine include one's affiliation? For that matter, do they include ANY Greek-related material?

Our does but I am assuming that the person who sent the info in to the magazine included it in what they wrote. I doubt teh school looks the info up to include it (and it's a small school).

Our alum mag started putting in a "Greek corner" about a year or two ago, but they never mention people's affiliation unless the person puts it in as part of what they're doing ("Zsa Zsa sells outrageously expensive baskets and is a national volunteer for Pi Pi Pi sorority").

If a school has an outrageously large percentage of Greeks, I can see them doing something like this. What school was this, hc, if you don't mind my asking?

I should have added: I wouldn't expect a school to look it up. Yet, I've had friends submit things with the affiliation, and it doesn't appear. One was my roomie: her marriage to a Delt had both of their affilations (and everyone in the Bridal party - it was like a Panhel-IFC mixer!) - no mention. She then got a book published, sent in the announcement, again with the affiliation, and it was left out again.

Or the Homecoming Court: would it kill them to say who sponsored each member, and/or their affiliation?

Believe it or not Ole Miss does not put what sorority or fraternity you are in when you submit "class notes" for the magazine. They will include write up's about your sorority or fraternity's alumni events though.

My alma mater doesn't put Greek affiliation in routinely, but does mention "Bride Suzie Q's XYZ sisters attended the wedding" or if somebody writes they are working/volunteering for a GLO in their blurb.

I attended a small liberal arts college and there isn't a seperate greek section. Since the only time people mail in pictures is at weddings it mostly only consists of their names and year they graduated. I would assume that it is written by the submitting person so you could add the greek affiliation but I've never really seen it in my 5 years getting the magazine. I wouldn't say that greek affiliation isn't important but it only comprises a small population of the college.

Greek Affiliation if listed by The Named should be put in as is requested by them if it is, not some Jag off making a decesion on their own.

They will not look to find it, but if You tell them You want it, then they should!

I am sure they may list the Other Greek Letters that are Honorary.

List One, List All!

I recently saw a friend's Wabash College alumni magazine, and practically every article discussed Greek life or mentioned the affiliation of alumni.

Listing one's greek organization may or may not be in keeping with the style guide of each particular alumni magazine. But the style guide is determined by the editorial board, not "some jag off."

As to matters of equity, I am pretty sure most do not list honorary Greek or other organizations after each mention. I have never seen, "Sally Smith, Phi Beta Kappa, was promoted to VP of her company" or "Joe Adams, Mortar Board, announces his first grandchild."

The Penn Stater lists if you were greek, if you were an RA, or if you were Blue Band along with your class and major.

Send a message via AIM to Sister Havana
The IU alumni magazine will put it in if someone mentions it.

I honestly don't remember, other than it was from Ohio. Ohio State? Ohio University? It was really a great magazine, and I admit that I read it for a day or two prior to putting it back in the mailbox! *blush*

It's been years since I've seen a Penn State, CMU, Cornell, or Allegheny College magazine, but I know they used to be very good about it. William & Mary and Duke, not so good. Those were the ones I saw in my family (and friends, in the case of Cornell). I know that I've said before that I grew up equating college to Greek life, and these write-ups in the school magazines were a goodly part of my indoctrination!
