I know this type of post must be put up here all the time, but I come from a small catholic college where there is no greek life. However I found out that in the 1930's there was a sorority. I'm in the process of trying to find out more information about it to possible try to restart it up. How would I go about starting a local sorority on my campus? I'm trying to write a constition, but besides that, and the technical aspect of it being ok'd by the college, how do i go about recruiting and establishing one?

A good place to start is with the person in charge of student organizations. Sometimes this duty falls under the Dean of Students. See what he/she has to say. The main question to be answered is,"Is there a need?"

If the administration is receptive to the idea, maybe there is a list of other young women wanting to do the same thing. Sometimes the Sudent Organizatinal office has a packet to get you started like a sample constitution and by-laws as well as resources. Have you talked with any of your friends? Women in your classes? How about your professors? Maybe one of them is a sorority member or may be willing to be an advisor.

Lastly, don't discount established organizations like Epsilon Sigma Alpha, www.esaintl.org, Beta Sigma Phi, www.betasigmaphi.org, NPC, www.npcwomen.org, or NPHC, www.nphchq.org. Joining a supportive established group can be better than reinventing the wheel. Hopefully, your college will allow that.

How long was the sorority in existance? 1930's makes it not out of the relm that some may still be alive. They are a valuable resource! My sorority has been working on establishing the origins of some of our traditions, so we spend a ton of time in college archives. The librarians LOVE it when students ask for archive help...they get to show their knowledge off. Alumni relations office also helps.

Since you are at catholic college, the college adminstrators might look more favorably on a sorority like Kappa Beta Gamma or Mu Epsilon Theta.



The thread on helping smaller GLOs made me realize that very few of us know about the national/regional social sororities who are not of the NPC.
