Health/Wellness Chair?
Anyone have one? I've been thinking that it would be interesting to have a sister who's job is to provide programing about health issues..not only about exercise and nutrition and sporting events, but about things like endometriosis and breast cancer and mental health and what have you. duties could include organizing hikes/rafting/canoeing trips and speakers from different health organizations. Thoughts?

that's an awesome idea! I think my collegiate chapter could really have benefitted from having a "health/wellness" chair.
Maybe she could also have a weekly help tip or fact for chapter meetings?
And to think, the only position I ever came up with (that was implemented anyway) was the food chair... That's kinda the opposite.

that's cute...food chair. we could've used one of those! we ate often together. GPB has a PACE chair (personal and chapter enrichment) whose job is to plan educational/informational things for the chapter similar to what you mentioned. it can be on anything though - etiquette, computers, health, etc. So, i think it sounds like a great idea!

Delta Gamma has a collegiate Well Aware Director on their Chapter Management Team (CMT). Some campuses fill this position, others do not. For more information contact www.deltagamma.org

heath advocate
I don't know how large your school is, but at the University of Minnesota, we also had Health Advocates. It was a course (I think just one credit) that you would take, and during that period you would get information about health issues, and would also be the Heath Advocate for your residence- sorority, fraternity, dorm, private res hall, etc. You would get health products and info from your class, and would be the go-to person for your house if anyone was feeling sick, too. I'd ask your campus health care system if they have any program like that.

That is such a good idea! I wish we'd had something like that. We had a program similar to what kchaptergphib described - people (usually pre-med students) volunteered, got some instruction from the med center, and then served as the go-to person if, say, you were sick and didn't know if you should see a doctor, or if you needed condoms, or whatever. It depended entirely on who volunteered - some living groups had more than one, some had none if no one was interested.

AGD has the Personal Development Coordinator. Much of her job is chapter programming. Programs were usually geard toward health and safety, but when I held that office, I tied in a bunch of worthwhile ones (time/finance management, etiquette, etc.) too.

Health & Wellness...
Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority has an International Health & Wellness Specialist.
The position is a part of our volunteer structure and serves on the Community & Personal Enrichment Team and is held by one of our alumnae. The volunteer job description is wide and diverse in responsibilities, but summarily, is for bringing-to-light many of the issues our members may face and also for helping to provide supportive information on two of our international philanthropic focuses: cystic fibrosis and anorexia nervosa.

I recently found out one of our sororities does. They do little inventory worksheets to show what dimension of their health needs work. They also went over the nutritional values of most of the popular items in our student unions and food courts.
It suddenly comes to mind that someone with this chair could probably organize trips to the gym and such--or get a whole group to sign up for some sort of kickboxing or aerobics class.

I always thought it would be fun to have an organization sponsor an ad in the student paper promoting the "Healthy Food of the Week" that could be found in the cafeteria or one of the other food venues on campus. The ad could describe why its good for you, where to get it and the price....and the group would get regular recognition in the paper for doing something good.

I love this idea and I hope you implement it!!! Is there someone in your chapter majoring in a health-related field (nursing, nutrition, pt, etc)? They may really take off with this idea - and it may fill some of their community health requirements for their major. The possibilities are endless - encouraging activity thru intramurals, programs as mentioned in other posts, organizing a Greek walk to bring awareness to exercise, hosting a healthy meal (if your chapter regularly eats together - we did on Monday nights), self-esteem type programs. You could take this a number of directions.
I have a masters in nursing and worked in occupational health for awhile. Now I'm in worker's comp (insurance based), but still have an idea what different corporations do for wellness ideas. Feel free to pm me if you want to talk further. I'll pull out some of my resources/ideas and we can make them more college appropriate than workplace appropriate.
