DMC's Adoption Journey on VH1 on 2.25.06
In 1997, hip hop legend Darryl McDaniels should have been riding high. Run-DMC was touring Europe after a remix put them back atop the charts, and money was rolling in. Instead DMC found himself alone in a hotel room, contemplating suicide. Coping with vocal troubles and creative differences with his group, he found no joy in the spoils of the rap game. Poison, a bullet, a giant leap were all options he considered. As he now recalls it, it was a song by Sarah McLachlan, "Angel," that brought him back from the edge. "Fly away from here, from this cold hotel room," she sang. "There's vultures and thieves at your back and the storm keeps on twisting." The sadness in her voice captured an emptiness D felt but could not explain - until a few years later.
In gathering information for his autobiography in 2000, 35-year-old D got a bombshell from the only mother he's ever known - she told him he was adopted. The revelation left him stunned and confused. Amid that emotional turmoil one thing became clear: Darryl wanted answers about his true history. Beginning in October, VH1 documented D's search for his biological roots, as well as his spiritual journey of self-discovery. At the start of taping, all D knew was that, according to the parents who raised him, a 16-year-old named Bernada Lovelace, who hailed from the Dominican Republic, gave him up for adoption in 1964. Video tape rolled as D consulted with experts, researched old archives, and followed the winding trail wherever it led.

Me too. I heard about it on Tom Joyner. Sounds very interesting.

This is really cool since we don't discuss adoption in our community as much as we should. I would like to adopt one day.

I would like to view the show as well. I have a special place in my heart for those adopted. I adopted 2 children not so long ago, but they are my second cousins, so they know their family roots, well half of it. I don't know much about their paternal side.
Good luck to all those considering adoption. It is truly a blessing.

Very pretty.
I thought it was something off about his voice. I thought maybe emotionally it was cracking. I have never heard him speak but the voice did throw me.
Very good documentary though. I learned a lot about him and adoption overall. I was glad to see his birth mother accept him with open arms.

I felt so full and happy for him after watching his journey and reunion with his mother.
If you compare him to his peers who are on the smothered pork chop diet (i.e. Big Daddy Kane), DMC is in good shape. Umph.

It was announced a few years back that DMC is suffering from spasmodic dystonia, a disorder that causes his voice to deteriorate. It can't be cured.
The show was very nice. I am very happy that he found his mother. I am glad that he allowed everyone to witness his journey.
Though DMC (Darryl McDaniels) is cool, I would have to agree that Darryl Lovelace flows nicely. However, it kind of sounds like some sort of porn star name. lol!

I saw this last night and enjoyed it. I liked how he added humor to what would otherwise be a trying and difficult situation.
My favorite part was the scene at the Hall of Records where his wife agreed that "Darryl Lovelace" sounded really nice.
"Oh but wait...that means you can't be DMC anymore!"
The video for his "Cats in the Cradle" remake was powerful. I was somewhat surprised to see him teaming up with Sarah MacLachlan, but it really was a good effort...considering her background as well.

I thought this was very good. I feel bad for him losing his voice though.
I was surprised at his mom's reaction. I guess she was just waiting for him to find her. I was mad @ the nephew @ her old place telling the aunt not to get involved. Didn't nobody ask you man..
I hope his adopted mom and brother understand why he needed to do that. He had to find out that part of him and it is not a reflection on how good/bad a parent you were. It is a natural thing and if you didn't want him to go look, then why did you tell him?
Sarah MacLachlan song Angel helped him get through when he found out he was adopted. He said he was sucidal and listening to that song helped him from going over the edge. So it was nice that he did a song with her.
Love the wife...and his son is funny..
