Question Alumnae Panhellenic Associations

Hi NPC Ladies,

Each spring, our local APA usually sponsors an informational seminar for female high school seniors who are interested in rushing as college freshmen. Do any of your local APAs do this as well? If so, how does it work? Are you allowed to promote your respective organizations during the event or is the message "Go Greek" instead of "Go XYZ Specifically"?

Thanks!

When I went through one, it was definitely a Go Greek vibe over anything else. However, of the six women presenting, two where Tri-Delt, three were KKG, and one was ChiO, none of which are on my campus. Therefore I wouldn't hav been influenced anyway. Plus, no undergrads were allowed to attend, only alums who are involved in the local Alumnae Panhellenic and high school seniors.

When the speakers were introduced, were their GLO affiliations mentioned? I ask because, at ours, the speakers' affiliations are kept confidential. (I assume it's so as not to bias any of the potential rushees.)

It wasn't announced, but one of the women said something along the lines of "I had an amazing time at the Kappa house..." and then when Q/A came around, we asked what each woman was. Plus that way, we knew who these women were affiliated so we could go to them for recs.

Ours aren't mentioned either. But most of us are wearing our badges anyway....

I like the way y'all do that. Unfortunately, we aren't allowed to tell any of the attendees our affiliations at any time during the seminar. To get recs, the potential rushees fill out information forms (basically it's a type of resume) that include the names of the schools they are considering. Our local APA checks which NPC sororities have chapters on those campuses and then sends the girls' forms to the local alumnae contacts for each of those sororities. Afterwards, the alumnae contacts can write recs for the girls if they feel comfortable doing so.

We aren't allowed to wear our badges or any other items that might suggest the sorority with which we are affiliated.

We weren't either. No mention of any house affiliation at any time when speaking to the women.

Keeping affiliation a secret is not a big deal at our Recruitment forum. The mothers usually ask anyway so we just put it out there upfront. Most of the girls don't have a clue anyway.

I remember meeting someone from "Kappa..." something when I was a senior in high school. She seemed nice and that gave me a favorable impression for all sororities when I got to college.

I haven't helped with the Recruitment forum in a couple of years so things have changed. I got this notice today:

"Remember NO Jewelry, etc. with Greek letters or badges please."

The e-mail I got didn't say anything about mentioning our affiliation (or not) so I guess I am missing the point. I always wear a crown or two so that will not change.

Yup, we have that back in my hometown, (not where I am currently though). I remember attending that event senior year in HS and all the ladies weren't allowed to mention their sorority by name; the only thing they were allowed to mention specifically was what school they attended otherwise everything was the whole "Go Greek" vibe not "Go [XYZ sorority]"

I wish we did do this! We have a Panhellenic Luncheon, with hundreds of alumnae and next to no PNMs!! Granted, it's to raise money for scholarships, and is pricy, but if we can put that together, we surely could go one step further and help prepare more seniors for Recruitment!

If there was anything like that where I went to high school, I definitely missed it. Of course, I probably wasn't the kind of high school student who would have been invited, lol. So maybe they did have it.

The past couple of years we've held an informational session with PNMs. The response has been so-so.

We invite the girls and their parents. We all wear polo shirts embroidered with the NPC crest and had APH nametags made up. We are sure to not wear anything that indicates oru affiliation and will request that other alumnae guest do the same.

(In fact, one year an FSU chapter general advisor attended with her niece and was decked out in her chapter affiliation's jewelry , including her chapter nametag. She got very offended when we asked her to remove it all. She pointed out that *we* had nametags and I pointed out that the tags were all the same and didn't mention affiliation. )

This year we are planning doing a booklet mailing to PNMs. We are able to request a mailing list from the local public school system and a couple, though not all, the private schools in the area will also provide us a mailing list. We will probably limit the mailing to those young women with a GPA of 2.5 and above.

If you want to look at the presentation we use during our live sessions, it's on our APH site. Link in my siggy.

Our panhellenic luncheon features a style show using local senior girls as models. A store will loan the clothing and dress the girls. This brings in mothers who in turn bring friends with their daughters, too. The number one question for a girl is "what do I wear?" so mom will pay to find out.

Each GLO group donates at least one basket of items for silent auction. Of course each group tries to outdo the others so there are lots of baskets and high bids.
