Red face KAN WE GET A HOUSE?????

First of all I would like to say greeting to my brothers in the bond of The Honorably Kappa Alpha Psi Inc. & to all other Frats & Soros out there. ?? Why at most D-1 or big schools even some black kolleges, BGLOS don't not have a house. I'm not talking about some little shack that the Bruhs or Sistas got & made a house, I'm talking about a legitimate house with dorm type rooms & a nice grandroom. All the necessary amenities. I went to Auburn University & for those who have been or visited there they know what I'm talking about. White Frats have Nice Houses...even at UGA & GaTech...just to name a few. We had a house as well as the Alphas, however it was nothing kompare to the others. Even at black kolleges those houses are all run down. Most schools help fund these houses, why not BGLOS. What do you all think we kould do to improve this. Do we need to start charging more for new intakes or what? How do you feel about this??????????

Actually free standing houses are usually owned by the fraternity/sorority housing corporation, which is a separate entity within the fraternity/sorority administration.

In those cases where the university owns the land, the fraternity or sorority either rents the land and house or rents the land and owns the house. I don't know of any housing, lodge or chapter room at a university where the university pays for the building/room in question. Universities do not fund GLO housing. If such housing or meeting space is provided, I can practically guarantee you that the university is making money off the rent they charge the GLO.

It is not a question of being a 'white' GLO vs. a 'black' GLO. It is a question of whether or not your fraternity can afford to provide competitive housing on your campus. Most of these grand houses you see are multi-million dollar investments on behalf of the fraternity or sorority in question. In addition, members contribute to the operation of the house as part of their dues. Members living in the house pay a housing and meals fee just like they would in the dorm. The difference is that the fees are usually less expensive, the food is better, and the house is cleaner and more secure than a dorm. In addition, most of these houses hold anywhere from 2 dozen to 5 dozen plus members. In my experience, most BGLOs don't have enough members on campus to financially secure a house, housekeepers, cooks and a live-in housemother/father. In addition, I do not believe any of the BGLO groups have a national housing corporation to assist with the purchase and maintenance of on-campus housing.

My fraternity, Zeta Tau Alpha, was the first NPC sorority to form a Housing Corporation and it is our model that most NPC and NIC groups use today. Most ZTA houses belong to our national housing corp. which provides monies for maintanence, upgrades, renovations and other amenities in addition to insurance. Some houses are owned by local housing corporations which administer their own monies and purchase local insurance or a policy from the national group.

Aren't those GLO houses funded by alumni as well as current members? And if not, are you in favor of taking in large numbers of people into your brotherhood to fund a house? For many students it's a struggle to remain financial. Also, increasing pledge fees will just price alot of people out.

Many alumnae chapters with houses struggle to pay for them, because everyone can't or won't make "some" effort to do their part.

My house is owned by a Housing Corp. which is run by alumni and actives. The active chapter pays rent to Theta Kappa Inc, the housing corp, and they invest the money, to make more money. In order to do major renovations, such as the new kitchen we are getting right now, we must finance it, and then the housing corp. pays for it out of the money we pay them, and the money they earn from investments. Other, smaller repairs and whatnot are paid for by the active chapter fund. I'm pretty sure alumni funded quite a bit of the original building expenses though, 25 years ago. Our house is built to be a fraternity house, like a dorm, and is on campus owned land.

Rain Man:I do know for a fact that while visiting the U. of Ala. Tuscaloosa that the NPHC orgs had VERY NICE houses, I'm talking mansion-sized just like the ones here at Oh. State. I saw the Omega house and the Delta[Sigma Theta] house and they looked off da hook! While I did not see the Kappa house per se, I do know they were on the yard there so I presume they had a similar house to that of other orgs. But that campus as far as large elegant BGLO houses are concerned is, as mentioned are the exception and far from the rule.
When were you on the campus of UA?

The Alpha Xi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi at Florida A&M University has a very nice house. I've heard of other campuses around the country that NPHC orgs. have some sort of housing arrangement.

On my campus, there is only one BGLS with a campus dorm (house). The Alphas, Kappas, and Ques have rent houses off-campus. While there are houses for the other NPC sororities, I don't think it's an issue of race on our campus. All orgs. had a house, but lost it back in the day and there just aren't any more dorms available.

Penguin Trax' post sounds like what goes on at our school. You have to have a certain number of members to keep your house. Sometimes, they let non-greeks in. Their housing fees are lower. They also get alumnae support and donations to keep the house looking nice.

I'm sort of glad, we didn't have a house. The greek population is small and house business tends to get out. I'm sure it helps to have a house when you have meetings and programs, but sometimes the drama can be too much.

just to shed some light on the housing situation at univ of alabama, those houses are owned by the university and are called small group housing. any group of students can get on a list to get a house. they can hold as many as 20 students, i think. for instance, the computer-based honors students had one. as of now, the alphas, aka's, deltas, and kappas have on-campus housing. the sigmas had a house. the omegas have an off-campus house by choice. they are nice houses and serve our chapter size well.

i am a ua grad that's why i know so much about it! roll tide!
