Question DC Area!

OK, so my husband travels to DC. A LOT. So much so, that a possibility to temporarily relocate exists. So we've been kicking the DC nerfball around. No guarantees, but we're in the talking stage.

Could those of you in the DC area clue me in on the best areas (safe, clean, culturally diverse, good schools, churches, etc.) for a young multiracial family to live? (I prefer Maryland personally, but I think his job is closer to Virginia). And Lord, Lord...I don't know WHAT to think about the cost of living there!!! *swoon*
Thanks in advance

Hi, you sound a lot like a teacher I met last summer. She relocated to the area through her husband and told me in her extensive research that Charles County, Maryland was the best choice as far as the things you mentioned above. Since I am a native I could offer a different opinion but it would depend on what is most important to you.

I will check that out (Charles Cty) but NOW you've got me curious about your differing opinion! Inquiring minds want to know....I would say the most important thing is finding affordable housing in a safe clean area! (Hope that doesn't sound too naive!)

On edit: What about Silver Spring/Takoma Park?

I'm not sure where to direct you in terms of a good neighborhood in D.C., but my friend goes to Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church on Rhode Island Avenue, N. W. The pastor's name is Terry Streeter. I've been to quite a few services, and it's great. They have tutoring for kids, girl scouts, boy scouts, and lots of other things. Check 'em out if you get a chance. Best of luck to you.

Alouette,

I will send you a pm but try searching the local news here. You will find relevant to Charles County -- one big arson related hate crime, shortage of dentists..., etc.

Re: DC Area!

since commuting is a BIG problem for the DC area, consider northern VA especially if hubby's job is close or in VA. charles county is a viable option because of the location relative to virginia and i believe you can still get more house for your dollar there. fort washington and waldorf are 2 areas in southern maryland that are rather nice. fort washington is in prince georges county and waldorf is in charles.

silver spring/takoma park are great locations due to the diversity. downtown silver spring has been revitalized and is a nice spot for all types of crowds to go and shop, hang out and live. both of these areas are in montogomery county which has a great school system but the housing prices are ridiculous.

overall the cost of living is pretty high all around so really think about what your long term goal is. crime has gone up in dc and prince georges county...im not sure about dc, but i know for a fact p.g. county crime has gone up.

whatever you decide i wish u luck.
