Announcements?
Hey, this is kinda a weird question, but I was curious.
Where you live, do they put fraternity/sorority affiliation in engagement or wedding announcements in the newspaper? I'm in the Northeast, and you almost NEVER see it here, but I saw an announcement the other day that had been pasted in from another paper and it had the bride-to-be's affiliation.

I live in the South and this is a very common practice.

i noticed that my little "neighborhood" newspaper, which comes out once a week, does list fraternity/sorority affiliation. i live in ohio. i'm not sure if a more widely-read paper in my area would do that, though.

I would guess that the newspaper would put whatever information the bride and groom want. Usually this includes what schools they went to, what degrees they received, and what jobs they currently hold. I have never seen a fraternity or sorority mentioned in an engagement or wedding notice, but I assume that's merely because the bride and groom chose not to share that information.

I agree with that. I have seen people list the things that they did in high school along with College stuff like the Spanish Club. No offense to any former H.S. Spanish Clubbers.

Here in the south, almost every engagement/wedding announcement has the Bride and/or Groom's affiliation. But, the Greek system is pretty important down here, so I guess its understandable.
When the debutantes for the year are announced in the newspaper, they always put the girls sorority afiliation. Interestingly enough, about 95% of the girls are members of Kappa Kappa Gamma. Once again, it must be a southern thing.

I like the above quote...it brought to mind this book "A Southern Belle Primer : Or Why Princess Margaret Will Never Be a Kappa Kappa Gamma":

I am in the South, too and it is common practice for members of organizations to reveal their affiliation.
Basically, it is up to the individual to do whatever he or she wants...

Another Southerner's view - On my announcement (both engagement and wedding) it had a specific space marked:
College:______________
Sorority/Fraternity:__________
Other affiliations:___________
The only thing I didn't like was it said "The bride attended XYZ college where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Fraternity for Women" - I wish they would have used it in present day tense somehow since I'm more involved now than I was then.

As a suggestion, perhaps it could be worded: "The bride attended XYZ college where she was initiated as a member of Alpha Chi Omega Fraternity for Women". To me that means where you began your journey as a AXO member, and that this journey is still ongoing as an alumna member. What do you think?

The paper puts whatever you want. It is common practice to put it in a wedding announcement. "The bride graduated from xyz university. She is a member of XYZ sorority." Like someone mentioned, I look to see if the person is a member of an organization I know.

I'm from the South, and yes, it is very important here. I also have noticed that most of the debutantes are members of Kappa Kappa Gamma, and during the last several years, Chi Omega. It does appear quite often in wedding and engagement announcements. However, here in Charlotte there are a LARGE number of people from the Northern States, and they do not tend to list Greek affiliation.
