Post Should GLO's still exist?

Hello everyone,

I am doing a graduate project in which I have to interview several people regarding an issue in higher education. Since I am involve in the Greek community, I decided to deal with an issue facing Greeks. If people could please answer the two questions I have included in this message I would appreciate it. I will also need your name and some personal info, but that can be sent to me personally through my e-mail at bsusean@hotmail.com. Here are the questions:

1. Should Greek organizations still exist on today's college campuses?
2. If you had to argue the "other side," what arguments would you make?

Thanks for responding.

It sounds like a very interesting yet controversial topic! Good for you!
I think when addressing this issue, what will help give weight to the pro-Greek side is the mention other philanthropy minded, fraternal (or sororal) organizations like The Lions Club, Rotary Club, Optimists' Club, Shriners, Knight of Columbus, Daughters of Job.
In a way, Boy and Girl Scouts are similar too: they're same sex organizations (for the most part, though some Boy Scout troops are now co-ed, I believe), they deal with philanthropy and also life skills (as do GLO's) It would be interesting to know, if we took a GLO and changed its Greek lettered name to something non-Greek (like Lions Club or something), would the critics still be so vocal?

2. If I had to argue the other side, I would say that sometimes GLO members (through immaturity, group think, drinking or wanting to embody the "negative fraternity image" stereotype) turn away from the principles originally set forth by their founders. From a community relations perspective, this is to their detriment.

Ok,

#1. YES!!!! GLO should exist. If you go to the "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE..." posting of this site, you will see the great things we do. In addition, there is the social aspect of it. Being greek is a WONDERFUL and unique networking experience. You can look at what the org. offers to the individual and what the individual brings when becomes member. True that one does not have to be greek to help the community, but it is much easier when the effort is a collective and organized one. Yes I am my own person but, it is a natural for humans to want ot belong to a bigger entity, which in this case the GLO offers. Then there is also the intake process. From my particular experience some things I learned from pledging. It is interesting to me how I bond with fellow greeks, share stories about one's journey to greekdom, support one another's activities, and so on. To put the caramel on top there is the LARGE SUMS of money product of the DUES we pay and which are use to give out SCHOLARSHIPS and do many other great things. One can talk about this for ages and continue to find different reasons. Besides, WHY SHOULDN"T WE EXIST? Hehehheh

#2. I am sorry but cannot think of an answer. I will sure come back and check
