Letters of Rec. for a Fraternity

Hey, I'm just starting my senior year of HS but stumbled on this site while doing my online apps. I am looking to go to the U. of Tennessee, Georgia U. and a few other big South schools. My Q is, i hear girls that want be in a sorority need letters of recs. but do guys? If i do could I get it from anyone or does the guy writing it have to be a member of that certain Fraternity? Thanks

It depends on the school (as a rule). If they are the norm where you end up going, then yes. But generally, no. (Call the school's office of Greek Life to inquire about the standard on the particular campus). The only exception is if you are a legacy (direct blood relative of someone who is already in a particular fraternity) and you would use a letter of rec to serve as an introduction. Being a legacy does not mean you get in automatically, but it does usually give you extra consideration and a leg up on everyone else.

Good luck.

Thumbs up

Brother lifesaver always gives excellent advice

While I went a smaller school than The Big Southern Schools, I would imagine it would be the same. But remember, Most of The Biggies can and will be more selective.

Check out School Greek Life Sites and Natioanl Web Sites to get a bigger picture.

Best of Luck in the future!

On some chapter web sites there may be a rush/recruitment page where you (the potential new member) may fill out general information about yourself. This allows the chapter to know you are interested. And as such, they may contact you regarding upcoming rush events. This can be very helpful if spring and/or summer rush events are allowed by the IFC for incoming and enrolled students.

And some university's Greek Life sites may also have a similar page as well.

ETA: I also recall seeing a few national websites that also had a page where you could request more information regarding membership.
