HUMAN EVENTS: brings me the straight facts

Each time I open HUMAN EVENTS, I am thankful for a news source that brings me the straight facts and keeps me one-up and a step ahead. From recent issues:

FACT: During a study on the competency of teachers, half the teachers failed a qualifying verbal and math test

FACT: The recently approved Highway Bill includes $255 million for bike paths

FACT: The top 50% of income earners pay 96.5% of the federal income taxes, while the lowest 44% pay no federal income taxes.

FACT: The federal government -- with your tax dollars -- subsidizes programs for kids to play golf at posh resorts

FACT: Federal employees spent $16.4 billion in 2003 on government charge cards. Some of those charges included: country club fees, personal clothing, movie gift certificates and beer

FACT: A recent national survey found that Democratic professors outnumber Republican professors 3 to 1 in economics, 28 to 1 in sociology, and 30 to 1 in anthropology

FACT: At least 1,074,000 illegal aliens were arrested along the Mexican border in 2004, more than in 2003 or 2002

FACT: The federal government is subsidizing yoga research

I'm not trying to disagree with any of your facts... I honestly have no idea about any of them.

I just thought I would give the opinion that there is no such thing as straight facts. They are almost always twisted in some way, and are sometimes completely made up.

Yours could be true, I don't know. But I would take every piece of information given to me with a grain of salt.

85% of statistics are made up on the spot.

If I were an angry Republican, I'd be upset that smart people tend to be Democrats.

Haha, kidding, but hopefully illustrative of the fact that you can use "statistics" to make whatever point you want.

RESPONSE: Probably because they had to memorize answers for standardized tests.

FACT: The recently approved Highway Bill includes $255 million for bike paths

RESPONSE: Which should fit in well with the President's request that we limit our driving.

FACT: The top 50% of income earners pay 96.5% of the federal income taxes, while the lowest 44% pay no federal income taxes.

RESPONSE: No wonder the country is borrowing so much -- the President keeps giving the top income people tax cuts.

FACT: The federal government -- with your tax dollars -- subsidizes programs for kids to play golf at posh resorts

RESPONSE: Don't look at me. I live in a golf course community, but none of our family has ever played a round.

FACT: Federal employees spent $16.4 billion in 2003 on government charge cards. Some of those charges included: country club fees, personal clothing, movie gift certificates and beer

RESPONSE: Yeah, those Bush boys really know how to dress and drink.

FACT: A recent national survey found that Democratic professors outnumber Republican professors 3 to 1 in economics, 28 to 1 in sociology, and 30 to 1 in anthropology

RESPONSE: That's why I majored in broadcasting where they had to teach "the Fairness Doctrine" and equal opportunity. Of course those were dropped under the Powell regime at the FCC.

FACT: At least 1,074,000 illegal aliens were arrested along the Mexican border in 2004, more than in 2003 or 2002

RESPONSE: And California still can't find enough farm workers, so Congress wants to make it legal for them to work here.

FACT: The federal government is subsidizing yoga research
RESPONSE: That's a stretch. (get it?)

Okay, I'll just comment on two things:

Let's be honest. I really don't care if my (future) kids' music and history teachers can't tell me what 13 squared is. Those teachers are NOT teaching them math, so what does it matter?

Good! I'm quite sick of hearing about bike-riders (and pedestrians) being struck and/or killed by cars.

And now, a random picture for another random thread from hoosier.

I was going to say that too, but then I realized that commenting on anything hoosier posts is relatively pointless.

I think that more than half the adult population, if given those tests, would fail too. As long as the teachers know the subject they're teaching, who cares?

And I love how the people complaining about how teachers aren't qualified are generally the same people who want to cut educational funding.

Aaaaand I am so sick of people whining about how we don't have enough Republican professors. This isn't because Republicans aren't getting hired -- it's because Republicans don't want to be professors. I'll bet that there is an overabundance of conservatives in the military or an overabundance of liberals who work in public health care, and guess what? Nobody cares. If you can give me a statistic that says 50 percent of the qualified people applying for anthrology professor jobs are Republicans but only three percent of those hired are, then you have a right to get all up in arms about it.

It seems that you stood on the "I'm going to post something wrong" soapbox, because you're really wrong in that post.

That's a shame for your kids.

And the highway bills are the worst bills and everyone knows it. They build bridges and roads in areas nobody goes to because it's free money for the state at the expense of federal taxpayers.

Sure.

Do a search for the threads that I discuss professors in.

I looked for them, but mostly all I could find was you snarking about spelling errors. You did post one article on why Republican professors may be scarce, but it was more conjecture than proof of anything.

Heather

You're right, that's actually what I meant to say.

Your debate skills continue to astound me.
