Family Emergency
Hey guys,
My dad had a stroke this morning. Seems to be somewhat of a small one but reading and speech have been affected.
I'm just looking for some advice or some personal experiences with relatives that have strokes. What can I expect? What can I do to help? Any good places to go for information? Does it get better?
Thanks bros.

Sorry to hear it Brother, I hope that you and your family are holding up...
The only advice I can really give you the same advice I was given: be there for your father; to be patient as well as understanding as he works through the problems with reading and speaking - offering gentle correction or assistance when needed. This is basically what I have been doing for my grandfather since his minor stroke back in March.

Thanks guys for the help. It's always nice to hear advice, because in a situation like this where I never dealt with something like this before, it's good to hear something solid.
Anyways he's speaking. The doctors said he got very lucky. He has some speech trouble but he's able to spell. The tests tonight will reveal what caused it etc.
Thanks again everyone. I know it's just an internet message board, but believe it or not, it does make me feel better.

Bro S. As You may know I lost My Father very recently and it is very tough to see someone who You Figure Will Live Forever, sadly enough, they dont!
It is an Oportunity for You to Have Him no matter how hard it is.
There are days that I dont think about Him and I berate Myself for it. I didnt see Him as often as I should have and He knew why.
It will be hard, but just bear with it! It is much harder when They are no longer there!
My Heart is With You!
In ZAX, My Brother.

Hey Tom, still got your number, probably call you tomorrow.
UPDATE: Thankfully it was only a "minor" stroke (if there is such a thing). Doc said he got lucky. He's walking and talking very well and I see improvement each time I visit him. It was a hell of a scare but I think he will recover 90-100%.
I want to thank everyone for the kind words and all the PM's. Sorry I couldn't respond more in full but time has been scarce lately.

SpeechPath,
My sister is a speech path. She's all involved in ASHA's leadership and stuff. I've been begging her to teach Tom how to speak for years, lol.
Anyway, thanks for your post and GZ, glad your dad is going to be OK.
