Talking Sela Ward

I was surprised that there wasn't a thread dedicated to Sela in our forum. But I was watching a commercial for the new movie Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, and Sela is in it!

Just thought I'd pass that along!

Sela's Thoughts About Being a Bama Cheerleader

I have to admit that most of my sideline focus was not on the fans in the stands but on #91, defensive tackle Bob Baumhower, my college sweetheart and later a great all-pro player for the Miami Dolphins! It was an enchanted, storybook time. My best friend and sorority sister dated quarterback Richard Todd; the four of us were inseparable for several of our college years. We were often found practicing "the hustle" (the "line dance" of our day) in the living room of the Chi Omega house or cruising around in Richard's red Cadillac convertible listening to Lou Rawls sing "Groovy People."

This article is found in the book- The Crimson Tide : An Illustrated History of Football at the University of Alabama by Winston Groom.

Well, Havana Nights opens today. Anyone going to see it? Sister Sela does play the Mom... Here's part of a review I found:

A six-word review is arguably all that's necessary for this movie: at least the dancing is hot. More a remake than a sequel, Havana Nights takes the Dirty Dancing formula (which is actually "Romeo and Juliet" crossed with "Cinderella" and transplanted into the 1950s) and infuses it with cross-cultural issues...The film opens in November 1958, with high school senior Katey Vendetto being transplanted to Cuba along with her mother, Jeannie (Sela Ward, trapped in an uptight, sourpuss role)...

Rating: ** out of ****

Sister Ward Gives Bama Commencement Address

Actress gives tips on success to UA graduates
5/7/2005
The Associated Press

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Award-winning actress Sela Ward's path to success after her cheerleading days at the University of Alabama had some obstacles, but she said she drew strength from them.

"I want to remind you that luck and opportunity are like gold nuggets in a river — they are available to everyone. You have to look for them, you have to believe in their presence and notice them. Make sure you are not walking around with your eyes wide shut, blaming others," Ward said in a commencement speech Saturday at her alma mater.

The university awarded about 2,400 degrees in ceremonies Friday and Saturday. Ward received an honorary doctorate of humane letters.

Ward, best known for her award-winning portrayals as Lily Sammler on "Once and Again" and Teddy Reed on "Sisters," is a 1977 graduate of the university's College of Communication and Information Sciences.

She received two Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe for her work on "Once and Again" and "Sisters."

"I stand here, representing what every one of you can achieve in your own way, and I assure you that the gap between us is not as wide as you might think and truly not as formidable or difficult to bridge as you may fear," Ward said. "The obstacles and the potential for setbacks are there, but they are part of what will strengthen you. And, if you pay attention, you will learn and grow from them."
