College Nights

Does anyone participate on behalf of Greek Life, not just a particular school? What have you seen been successful?

My husband and I were just talking about College Nights as kind of a pre-rush primer after watching Sorority Boys for the millionth time. It seems that College Night, while kids are with their parents, might be a good time to educate them and maybe even recruit prior reluctants! These yucky sterotypes about greek life are starting to get really old and boring. I just want to see what might be done to help curb those attitudes!

what are college nights? are you referring to the orientations colleges hold for their matriculating students or for college fairs held for hs students?

A lot of high schools that I've seen hold College Night where students come and get interest packets from the different universities. Sometimes officials from the university man a booth, and other times alumnae from a particular college run it. It's mostly a college information night.

Hmmm. We had a financial aid night, never heard of a college night. We had college fairs, that reps from the schools would come and do booths, and the students could go around and talk to them. I don't know how well something like greek life would fit in, it's an interesting idea. But at those things, students and their parents (if the parents attend, ours didn't attend the college fairs) are more concerned about getting into college, what kind of financial aid they can get, and the like.

i thought that might be what you were referring to. here in naples, a huge college fair is held at the local mall. my daughters school(a private school) also holds a fair that same afternoon, and while some of the same colleges set up booths, it is considerably smaller than the mall one. the main thrust of these fairs seem to be just getting general information to hs students so that they might start the college search. parents are able to attend with their child.setting up a table at the college fair by the local panhellenic is a great idea. do you suppose that npc would provide pamphlets if local alumnae panhellenics were willing to man a booth?

The Tucson (Arizona) Unified School district holds a very large college night at the Tucson Convention center every October. For the last 3 years the Tucson Alumnae Panhellenic has had a table. We get put with the "other" groups -- the testing services and other non-academic organizations. We usually have pretty good traffic amd we hand out UofA greek life booklets from that fall as well as some of the handouts you can get from NPC.

Are you asking prior to selecting a university or once a student have selected college XYZ and their is an orientation/parents day about the university.

Locally we have a college fair in a convention center where there was no greek rep. and I like the AZ idea with the local panhellenic being their. many High Schools, as the one I work in, also hold college fairs.

I do know my university had a students/parent orientation weekend (they had many over a summer to chose from) where students registered, picked a dorm room, got tours, etc... and maybe having the local CPC and IFC present and ask questions would be great so the parents & students know about greek life before signing them up.
