Why primarily Baptists?
West Boro, Southern...it seems the most radical hate groups against gay people involve this particular denomination. Heck, my church, while technically non-denom, is in jerry Falwell's Baptist network......
You think there's a reason?

There are more than just a handful of Baptist groups, that are "radical" against homosexxuals. Don't let the media convince you otherwise (based on what is reported).

I find it really interesting that in the US, the largest Protestant group is seen (generally) as being very conservative, while in Canada, the largest Protestang group is very liberal (The United Church of Canada (Methodists, Congregationists and 66% or so of Presbytarian Churches). In Canada, Baptists make up only 2.5% of all Christians.

I think that it has something to do with the difference in religious expression between the US and Canada - or how public or private each nation views a persons religion. My neighbour growing up was a Baptist Minister and his famliy from Florida, and he felt the fundamental difference was the acceptance of evangelism, a difference that meant that people became offended if you approached them about their faith.

My guess is because they (Baptists) are the most outspoken on a lot of subjects.
Care to dance?

I think this is the reason, but I also agree with DeltAlum that maybe it is CERTAIN churches that are the most outspoken. The vast majority of Baptist churches (even Southern Baptist ones) aren't out there on the picket line protesting fags or anything...
It kinda sucks being a Southern Baptist and being painted with the crazy brush- we are pretty normal except the whole "no dancing in the reception hall" thing.

I soo agree with this! I'm not Southern Baptist, but it is easier to say "Baptist" than "American Baptist Evangelical".
Around here, it's usually the Presbyterians who get their drawers in a knot and are in the news. I'm sure in other cities it's the Methodists or some other group.
You all do know why Baptists don't believe in have sex while standing up, don't you? Because it may lead to dancing!

I don't think Southern Baptists are nuttier than other denominations as a whole, it's just that there are a lot of nutty-ass Southern Baptists wanting to get on TV and talk some mess.
I, with my liberal self, worked for the Southern Baptist Convention one summer. It was one of the most fun jobs I had.

A lot of churches label themselves "Baptist," but the denomination as a whole varies widely from church to church and depending on which convention they associate with. I'm not a Baptist myself, but I know that a couple local churches didn't agree with the Southern Baptist Convention's more conservative direction and withdrew, but they're still Baptist churches (though one of those has a lady pastor--something unusual in a Baptist church, but kind of cool, IMO).
It's just the nut-jobs that give everybody else a bad name, I guess, as with any large group.

I agree. You can't judge the whole on a handful, but since just a handful can make a lot of noise, it'll sound like the whole is behind it all.
I grew up in Baptist school and they were definitely kinda crazy. "If you drink alcohol, you're going to hell, if you associate with gay people, you're going to hell, if you're different from us we'll ostracize you until you join the fold." Those people were all really nice, but really nuts. They were so scared of EVERYTHING, you couldn't experiment with anything without "playing with the devil." It was an excellent school, but I had to leave. Now, after that I had a sore view of Baptists, but I learned that the entire Baptist population isn't like that. BIG RELIEF
