Soror, sorry you are so upset!! I don't know where you are from but I'm sorry I just don't share that same feeling.
We are the smallest and least known of the 4. That is a fact. I'm not angry when we are overlooked. I don't think that people do that intentionally. I think back to my undergrad days when all I saw was pink and green and crimsom and cream. I never knew a Zeta or an SGRho. Having graduated and been in the working world for a good while now I have met members of all kinds of organizations. I'm glad I waited because I feel I chose the best!!!!!!!!!!!
I am an educator and I am proud of the fact that the sisterhood I chose to be a member of was founded by 7 educators who wanted to turn things around for the education of our youth. I am committed to our youth in my community, through my church, and through our beloved sorority. You're not the only one dedicated. Most sorors I know are dedicated. Please don't be so angry. It breaks my heart (seriously)
No, it's just not the other sororities who are getting all the members. While they may be larger than we are, we are still continuing to grow. It doesn't bother me that we are smaller. I like it that way. It means that we work harder. Other sororities may be larger but do their members know why they joined? Because it was the "popular" thing to do at that school at that particular time? Thank God I didn't do the same because I would be wearing some other letters and colors and at this point in my life not really know why. I have met so many AKAs and Deltas in my school system who have never been affiliated with a grad chapter. Now that's sad. They can boast about numbers but how many are doing the honest to God work?????
I hope I can help lift your spirit some. I and my grad chapter sorors work hard all year round promoting "Greater Service, Greater Progress". Even if you feel you are the only one dedicated then continue to be dedicated. Wear your 'nalia every day and continue to be proud of the choice you made.

I understand why you are upset, but by no means are we responsible because he forgot our sorority. We are supporting him financially, if only by listening to his show. You made a good point we may not have a chapter, but that does not excuse the time he has done this before.
Keep your head up and the faith in your heart. We (meaning all of us) have to stop complaining and take action about the state of our sorority, our neighborhoods and our nation.

I feel that it is all our fault for this happening. He isn't the first person ot overlook us and he isn't going to be the last. Because our sorority is getting behind on a lot of things and it angers me that I feel that I am the only one dedicated to the cause of this sorority. Yeah I know we all have lives to live. But I feel that Sigma Gamma Rho is a small part of my life!! I like making my LIFE better!!! Our founders put in a lot of work getting their dream off the ground and it seems we are letting it go!!! The death of our last Founder should have been a wake up call to all sorhors far and near!!! I don't have anything else further to say because I am way too angry at this point. And you all wonder way AKAs, Deltas, and Zetas are getting all these new members!! Think about why?

I must admit, I am very taken back by what Soror Blue1922 has posted. I do understand your frustrations, but it appears that you are tearing down the efforts of thousands of sorors across this country. I am my sister's keeper and whatever initiatives and programs we are doing I, along with many other sorors, are doing the best we can to further its cause. If you think you are alone, then you are. Please understand that many people join Sigma to work and not always be in the lime light. If you joined Sigma to be recognized, then you joined for the wrong reason.
I have sat in our local Pan-Hell recognition banquets and heard the All Greek Calendar...Sigma Gamma Rho did the most hands on community service out of all the other sororities and frats. That is what we are here for...to uplift the community. If you continue to focus on other's percetions of your sisterhood, you will constantly be frustrated by not living up to a standard they have created for you. Make sure that you are active in Sigma on all levels, not just locally, but regionally and nationally. Network and find out what sorors are doing all across the country before you make blanket statements like the one you posted.
Also, be aware that non-sorors observe our attitudes and they take from this as well.
May God bless you my sister.

Tom Joyner may not recognize us, but you have to realize that even though the deltas, aka's, and zetas may be large in number, sigma gamma rho is large in love, dedication to ourselves, and our community. It is our job as sorors to express to the world that blue and gold is the only way to go. I work hard in my undergrad chapter to live up to our slogan. My chapter got it's charter in March of 1999 and we have brought in 18 members already. We are proud of that. We express to our college community what it means to be a sigma woman. Don't fret when people don't recognize who you are because then that gives you the opportunity to educate. If it bothers you so much, write, call, fax, email, Tom Joyner and voice your concern. The sigma woman "is not afraid to stand for what's right even if she stands alone"
SIGMA LOVE my sister

Well this will be the last time I post on here because there are too many sorhors taking stuff out of hand!!! TO respond to one sorhors comment about joining Sigma to be recognized. NO I didn't join Sigma to be recognized, but I feel we should be recognized. So what's wrong with that! I am getting mass e-mails about what happened on that show and been asked to write in about it.I don't know who many of you sorhors got that e-mail but I did.
I know a lot of sorhors are getting tired of being over looked and most feel that it is our own fault. And yes I know there are sorhors working for Sigma. The comment I made was out of frustration and I know all of you had experienced frustration at some point in time in your life and you feel that your the only one going though it!!!
I just want Sigma Gamma Rho to be better than what it is now and it can be! That's all I am trying to get at. But like I said before you won't hear from me on this forum again!!!

Blue1922,
I totally feel you!!! I am on a couple of the egroups and if you've seen messages from me (Monique), you know that I am always pumped about us getting out there and getting SIGMA into the mouths of others!
Sigma, does her work and is all about the community, but when it comes to public relations and MARKETING (which is something that I think EVERY non/not for profit organization should focus on)--we are not where we should-and can be!
Like I've said before, we may be the youngest of the sororities, but we are almost 80 years old....there's no excuse for people still not knowing who we are! And if they dont know, it is our job to EDUATE them! Personally, I refuse to settle when we are overlooked (whether its accidentally or intentionally). Why? Cause none of the other organizations are going to speak up for me! It's MY job to jump in there and make some noise when someone talks about the NPHC sororities and doesnt mention Sigma!
I dont think soror Blue1922 was tearing down the efforts of thousands of sorors....the media (and i hate using such a broad term, but I cant think of anything better)is downplaying OUR accomplishments and status, when they dont recognized us.

To Soror Blue1922 and Pretty Poodle...
If you would like to address my comments, I would appreciate a more private arena...please e-mail me at SDiva22@aol.com. That is fine if you do not address me, however I think that we all need to remember that there are always 2 or more points of view. I thought the purpose of a forum was to address different points of view. If I am wrong, I apologize and I will not read or post stuff here. I have been a soror for almost 10 years and thought we could have mature dialog. I respect your opinions and I even said that I agreed, however we do need to pick and choose our battles. Again, I invite you to respond to me personally.
Sisterly Yours...

Greetings,
I am not a member of your organization, but my best friend is. She has mad love for SGR and she is about handling business. Anyway, I was listening to a party advertisement on the radio. That mentioned every greek except for SGR and the Iotas. I think that was total disrespect because we do have SGR and Iotas in the state of Alabama and the radio station was specifically advertising for a HBCU.
I have mad love for SGR because they show me love. I do not have any intentions of being a part of your organization, but I think it is due time for you to get your respect. I can tell by the responses that you are not letting any of this bother you and I commend you.

Hello ladies:
After reading Blue1922's post I decided to email Tom Joyner with a gentle reminder that there are four NPHC sororities. He emailed me back today. His email reads as follows:
It's me Tom.
I am sorry that I did not mention your sorority. I am sorry about that. I meant no disrespect and I truly admire what Sigma Gamma Rho does in the community. Please accept my deepest apologies.
Please also forgive Tom for assuming that I was a soror. I'm sure his apology is genuine and I hope you all accept it in the spirit it was given.
Keep your heads up ladies!

Thank you MidWest Diva but we already knew what his response was. Most of us are busy with the business of Sigma and working in our communities to get too bent out of shape about this.
In response to the other post above regarding the omission of Iota Phi Theta, even though they are a part of the NPHC, some don't accept or acknowledge that but they don't get bent out of shape either -- they keep persevering and are about to open their new national headquarters this month!!

I was reading this post and it's taken me a few weeks to respond to it because we were also discussing it on our Yahoo club and I thought to myself who ever said "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me"...Sorors we are too mature to decide not to post on the message board because we disagree...we are not all suppose to agree on everything we are all individuals with different opinions (I AM GOING TO CHECK TO MAKE SURE YALL ARE POSTING ON HERE OR ELSE IM GOING TO EMAIL ALL OF YALL) seriously now..so many things have hurt us when we have been over looked by other organizations and people like Tom Joyner but think about what our founders must have went through when they first started this illustrious organization thinik about the looks they must have received...the questions...the ridicule....can we all sit here and say to ourselves that we are not big enough or we are all not intelligent enough to stand up and represent our organization....think about Sorors like myself who searched high and low to find memebers of this organization to talk about our interest to it took me two years before i became a member the other sororities were there but i waited because i knew what was in my heart....I am saying all this because i didn't join SGRho to be recognized (I don't believe anyone does) we are not here for a popularity contest....absolutely no one can deny the impact that we as members and an organization has had on our communities...some of us are teachers/lawyesr/mothers/wives/nurses/students/doctors/managers....we create changes everyday....God sees it and to be hoest thats enough for me....Sorors PLEASE DO NOT FORGET NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO FOR SIGMA BIG OR SMALL IT TOUCHES SOMEONE.
