Center stage. The Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and Delta Delta Delta sorority perform at the final practice for Songfest. The competition will take place at 7 p.m. tonight at Bovard Auditorium. Of the 1,200 tickets available for purchase, only 200 are still for sale, according to Songfest committee members.

Step right up, step right up! Feast your eyes on the largest philanthropy on USC's campus. Witness Alpha Phi and Zeta Beta Tau, the defending Songfest champions, compete against 15 other campus organizations that have been preparing for this event since the beginning of the semester.

Spectators will also get to see a number acts perform at Songfest that aren't competing for the No. 1 spot this year, including an a capella from USC's Reverse Osmosis and a dance routine from the USC Song Girls. Children from Troy Camp will also be at the show to do a shirt skit as well.

A silent auction is to be held before the show starts, with items such as Los Angeles Lakers tickets to any regular season game next year, an autographed football and jersey by Heisman Trophy-winner Matt Leinart or a six-month membership to Gold's Gym up for grabs.

All proceeds from Songfest will go toward Troy Camp, a big brother/sister support group that act as mentors for children in South Los Angeles.

Songfest competition, raised more than $14,000 for Troy Camp

Re-living childhood in song
"I Don't Wanna Grow Up," this year's Songfest competition, raised more than $14,000 for Troy Camp.

After months of preparation, the organizations involved with this year's Songfest performed to a sold out Bovard Auditorium Friday night.

Songfest, a fund-raiser for Troy Camp, USC's largest, most-diverse philanthropy, raised a total of $14,376. The committee's goal of $10,000, 10 times the amount of last year's Songfest, was an unbelievable goal that the event was able to surpass.

A total of 19 organizations were involved, and 12 organizations competed to win this year's sweepstakes trophy, along with first runner-up, second runner-up, best choreography, best set design, best costumes, best singing and best director. After almost two and a half hours of performances, the Spirit of Troy Marching Band performed while the judges tallied up their scores to determine the winners.

This year's theme was "I Don't Wanna Grow Up." Each organization had the opportunity to talk about fears of becoming an adult, an issue that can particularly plague any college student.

Performances touched on various issues revolving growing older, including the rivalry amongst boys and girls, fears about going to college and cooties.

Winners included Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and Delta Chi fraternity for best director. Their performance, titled "Little Rascals," talked about the age-old rivalry between boys and girls, specifically when the members of the "He-Man Woman Haters Club" found out that fellow member, Alfalfa, fell in love with Darla.

Best singing went to Alpha Delta Phi sorority and Kappa Alpha Psi for their performance titled "Nightmare before College," a take-off of Tim Burton's "The Nightmare before Christmas" and talked about the fears of going to college.

Best costumes, as well as first runner-up, went to USC Helenes and Trojan Knights for their "Lost in Oz" performance. The USC Helenes and Trojan Knights won second place last year, and were hoping for first place this year, but was not strong enough to beat Alpha Chi Omega sorority and Alpha Gamma Omega fraternity's "Adventures at Summer Camp," which imitated Troy Camp. The members of Alpha Chi Omega and Alpha Gamma Omega pretended to be both campers and counselors of Troy Camp at a campout. The highlight of their performance was when the lights went out and suddenly every person on stage turned on their flashlights. Michael Jackson's "Thriller" accompanied the performers as they danced the famous sequence from the music video. This scene showed creativity and originality and definitely made their performance stand out among the others. Jonathan Kahn not only directed with Karen Spurney, but also wrote the script for the performance.

Century's "A Seussical Trail" won for best set design, where they constructed an approximately 8-foot-tall story book with classic Dr. Seuss illustrations.

The members of Zeta Beta Tau fraternity and Alpha Phi sorority, who have won first place for the past two years, sat in the front rows of orchestra, cheering and awaiting their new members to perform. Zeta Beta Tau and Alpha Phi's "A Flashback: Ringin' in 1989" won best choreography, but was only enough to win second runner-up.

Other competitors that did not place included Delta Delta Delta and Phi Kappa Psi's "Saved by the Bell."

Other competitors included Kappa Alpha Theta and Pi Kappa Phi; Pi Beta Phi and Sigma Chi; Delta Gamma and Delta Tau Delta; and Gamma Phi Beta and Kappa Sigma.
