After months of preparation, the organizations involved with this year's Songfest performed to a sold out Bovard Auditorium Friday night.
Songfest, a fund-raiser for Troy Camp, USC's largest, most-diverse philanthropy, raised a total of $14,376. The committee's goal of $10,000, 10 times the amount of last year's Songfest, was an unbelievable goal that the event was able to surpass.
A total of 19 organizations were involved, and 12 organizations competed to win this year's sweepstakes trophy, along with first runner-up, second runner-up, best choreography, best set design, best costumes, best singing and best director. After almost two and a half hours of performances, the Spirit of Troy Marching Band performed while the judges tallied up their scores to determine the winners.
This year's theme was
"I Don't Wanna Grow Up." Each organization had the opportunity to talk about fears of becoming an adult, an issue that can particularly plague any college student.
Performances touched on various issues revolving growing older, including the rivalry amongst boys and girls, fears about going to college and cooties.
Winners included
Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and
Delta Chi fraternity for best director. Their performance, titled "Little Rascals," talked about the age-old rivalry between boys and girls, specifically when the members of the "He-Man Woman Haters Club" found out that fellow member, Alfalfa, fell in love with Darla.
Best singing went to
Alpha Delta Phi sorority and
Kappa Alpha Psi for their performance titled "Nightmare before College," a take-off of Tim Burton's "The Nightmare before Christmas" and talked about the fears of going to college.
Best costumes, as well as first runner-up, went to
USC Helenes and
Trojan Knights for their "Lost in Oz" performance. The USC Helenes and Trojan Knights won second place last year, and were hoping for first place this year, but was not strong enough to beat
Alpha Chi Omega sorority and
Alpha Gamma Omega fraternity's "Adventures at Summer Camp," which imitated Troy Camp. The members of Alpha Chi Omega and Alpha Gamma Omega pretended to be both campers and counselors of Troy Camp at a campout. The highlight of their performance was when the lights went out and suddenly every person on stage turned on their flashlights. Michael Jackson's "Thriller" accompanied the performers as they danced the famous sequence from the music video. This scene showed creativity and originality and definitely made their performance stand out among the others. Jonathan Kahn not only directed with Karen Spurney, but also wrote the script for the performance.
Century's "A Seussical Trail" won for best set design, where they constructed an approximately 8-foot-tall story book with classic Dr. Seuss illustrations.
The members of
Zeta Beta Tau fraternity and
Alpha Phi sorority, who have won first place for the past two years, sat in the front rows of orchestra, cheering and awaiting their new members to perform. Zeta Beta Tau and Alpha Phi's "A Flashback: Ringin' in 1989" won best choreography, but was only enough to win second runner-up.
Other competitors that did not place included
Delta Delta Delta and
Phi Kappa Psi's "Saved by the Bell."
Other competitors included
Kappa Alpha Theta and
Pi Kappa Phi;
Pi Beta Phi and
Sigma Chi;
Delta Gamma and
Delta Tau Delta; and
Gamma Phi Beta and
Kappa Sigma.
