Grad School - HBCU vs. PWI

Is anyone in grad school at an HBCU??

Why did you choose an HBCU vs. an PWI?

I am in grad school at a PWI and I have had my ups and downs. Although I would love to be at an HBCU I am glad I am here for several reasons. If you want to chat about it, hit me up.

I'm at a PWI, because it had the major I wanted.

PWI, it is the only choice for me primarily because there are no HBCU's in New Jersey or north of here for that matter.

There's only one HBCU that had the program I wanted (Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing) and it was brand new and a little too far away for me.

I honestly haven't thought about applying to an HBCU for grad school but it's something I will look into...

I don't think that there is a general right-or-wrong answer to this. On the graduate level, a person's institutional choices tends to be swayed more by convenience or cost in a lot of cases.

I am at a PWI for my MBA, but if I choose to get a second Master's or a Ph.D it will depend on where I can get in and how much it will set me back.

...I will have to agree with this brother's statement. I attended a PWI undergrad. institution because of serveral factors; academic rep, ranking with PWI, school size, etc. In graduate school (MA), for me, it was/is more of convenience and cost. I will be applying to Ph.D programs in the fall and I will most certainly be looking for a research I institution with well-published faculty because that is what I want to become.

Only you know what type of environment is conducive to your learning and professional development. Use that as your direction more so than anything else.
