no greek life

My college currently has no greek life. However, several girls have expressed intrest in starting a sorority, is this possible on a campus with no other greeks? Should we start a local? and what is the difference between a local and national?

Find out if Greek life is even ALLOWED on your campus.
This is a valid point, but only if its a private institution. If this is a public university, and you're told that its not allowed, contact your local ACLU chapter. That might sound like a lot to go through, but it would be a wonderful life experience to fight for something in which you believe.

If you decided to go with a national NPC the school would be open for expansion and each sorority interested would present to the faculty/administration/interest group (correct me if I'm wrong).

You're basically correct, except only the Panhellenic has to vote to open for expansion.

just to put my two cents in...you have lots of options if you want to go for a national organization. you can also choose a nphc, multicultural, or culturally driven (latina, asian, ect.) organization. i would suggest figuring out what type of organization you want to be a part of (in terms of goals, principles, size, ect.) and from there look for one that exemplifies what you want. if you don't find one, then look to starting a local. but there are SOOO many organizations out there that i can't imagine you can't find one that works for you.

personally i think it's better to go with a national org because of the support. as a national organization you have the joy of being able to travel across states to other chapters and being able to pull a large group of women together is especially helpful when you are new on campus.

either way, good luck!

Thumbs up

Good advice all!

Get input from School first. Without their approval, you will be dead in the water.

Is it a Private or Govt Funded School?

If it is amiable with the school, then contact NPC Organizations or any others to get an idea of what needs to be done. Make sure, you are working with the School Activity Advisor to get He/She backing first.

Develop a Resume of what You want to accomplish, who you have, How many, what they are envolved in, GPA of said Group.

It is like looking for a Job, You must sell yourseves.

The best of luck to be sure. I did it and did not follow the rules. 40 Years later here We are!

If it is an Organizsation of National Status, are they Located in Your local area or looking to expand there.

i'm not very versed on locals or expansion, but just my 2 cents....

don't worry what to do if they turn you down, focus on the present. you need to get a presentation together or what it is that you are wanting to present to the student activity advisor. worry about the outcomes later.
