Councils Other Than Your Own

What do you know about other councils?

What would you like to know about other councils?

Since I held a disciplinary position in the Greek Life office, I had to have some knowledge of all three councils from my yard. However, now that I am no longer in that position, I have no desire to know more.

I didn't come from a "Greek" school in undergrad, so there's a lot I'd like to know about NPC and NIC organizations. (NPHC and NALFO orgs were represented.)

I don't know what more I could learn that I haven't already gotten a taste of through GC....but I do like learning about all orgs, so whatever's clever!

I really don't know much about the NPC nor the IFC. I would like to know what is the relationship with their respective orgs.

For example, the NPHC is not a ruling body of the D9 orgs. It is a body of representation of the orgs to discuss mutual issues. But it does not make policies for the D9. Is it the same for NPC and IFC?

The NIC is much like NPHC it is not a ruling body. The resolutions it passes are not binding and the member fraternities are in no way obligated to follow them. It is basically a networking and programming org. Over the past few years some NIC members have dropped out and either joined other bodies or formed their own networking and programming body.

Unlike the actual NIC, campus IFCs, usually are ruling bodies unless the school has direct rule over greek life. Which mine is switching more to an administration controlled approach with a "Delaware" style plan being introduced.

I'm not sure about NPC, correct me if I'm wrong and I'm sure you NPC members will, but, it is my understanding that NPC resolutions and decisions are binding and member orgs must comply with them. Is that correct?

I'm not a member of a NPC org, so I can't answer your question. But thank you for the explanation of NIC.

Love to know more about any of the councils (some of which I hadn't heard of until this thread). The only one that I have a passing familiarity with is the NPC - and only because I had the misfortune of sitting in on a CIFC meeting where issues raised by the latest additions to the Green? book where discussed... that and the NPC is the only council that has any sort of decernable presence on my campus...

For me I'd like to know more about the rush and bid process.

Is this same process used for sororities and fraternities?

This varies greatly between schools. Almost all NPC sororities participate in some sort of formal recruitment week, where girls attend different events, and a bid matching system is employed. But this rush is usually put on by Panhellenic- so in some unique cases, the sororities may not have a formal recruitment.

Fraternities do not have this bid matching system or a rigid formal recruitment like sororities do. At individual schools, they may choose to conduct a structured recruitment period to aid fraternities in rushing men.

Sorry if that's vague- I don't know what you already know!

Also, to answer a question- yes, individual chapters of sororities are required to abide by the rules that NPC sets forth, or the Unanimous Agreements. But since the NPC delegates are members from our national organizations, it's a "for the people, by the people" sort of thing.

Also, there are very few "Unanimous Agreements." Most are "Resolutions" and are merely suggestions for the sororities to follow (a very strong suggestion, but still a suggestion)

I was past president of the MGC on my campus so I attended both IFC and PHC meetings on a regular basis. I also got a copy of the Green book to learn about PHC. I think I am farily knowledgeable about those 2 councils. I am still learning about NALFO and the NMGC.

for those that are in MGC, what do you see as the main difference(s) between your chapters and the others? not trying to make it sound good or bad either way. if a student comes to you and says whats the difference btwn mgc and npc/nic chapters, how do you explain it to them?

As secretary of the MGC, I'd say the meetings run very smoothely-we have 6 members and 1 associate. Then again, we are still very new-MGC was established in 2000 here (FSU).

As the org's themselves are so new at such a large university where Greeks have always played a large part, I think that IFC/PHC members always find it interesting that most of us don't have 'rush' the way they do. Also MGC and NPHC put on a lot of educational seminars/community service projects, which I'm not sure if IFC/PHC do-perhaps they do also, but only amongst their chapter, because I have not seen advertisings.

I'd love for us to have 'crushes', they seem really fun! We do have parties every month but we have to charge at the door, so it's not the same...

I know that IFC/PHC orgs do community service through their chapters, but I'd also like to know if they put on educational events at your school-panel discussions, seminars, etc

Btw, today was FSUnity day, and many many members of all councils were represented=)

NALFO is not a governing body like some of the other councils, but serves to unite it's member organizations. Here is the web link:
