who has tivo with DirecTV
I am thinking of getting it, but I dont have a land phone line. I know you need one so the tivo can call in and get program info. but I live in the same building as my mom and I figure I can splice hers and run it up to my house for the tivo.
now, my ? is, how does tivo get hooked up to the directv?
i'm tired of using vcr tapes to tape my shows. its a PITA to program the vcr.!!!

My parents have it but I'm not sure how it is hooked up. The only thing I find confusing is that if you change the channel the tivo stops recording. Does anyone know if there is a way to fix that or is that just the way it is?

My TiVO box also serves as the box for my DirecTV. So I tune in the stations on that box, while also setting recordings. You need the phone line so DirecTV can download the schedules and whatnot to the box every night. I think you can splice a phone line into it. I have only one phone outlet (with expandable phones) but I just have a double telephone outlet in the phone jack.
As for how to watch one station while recording on another. I have TWO satellite lines running into the back of my box. So one can be recording a show while I switch channels with the other feed. I can also record two shows at the same time when I am not home or in bed.
I am no gadget geinus, but it is pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Sorry if I confused you....

yeah my parents have it, its AWESOME.
if you want to record something, and change the channel, you gotta press the green thumbs up button. But why change the channel anyway, the whole advantage of Tivo is to record your shows that you want to see and then just watch them later..

Okay, I have a different DVR now, but I had a tivo for 4yrs.
You don't need a phone line. If you have cable internet you can use that to connect with. You just need a converter. You can get them for varying prices, but your absolute best bet is from ebay because I see them sell for like $10-15 there all the time.
I actually suggest a DVR from say a local cable company over Tivo though. Tivo only lets you record one program at a time, and most other DVR's let you record two. And the price is the same, so why not get more for your money.
Anyway, if you have any more questions feel free to PM/IM me.
