The Yankees are mad at the New York Times for being pro Red Sox

March 29, 2005 -- THE brush-back pitch thrown by The New York Times at the New York Yankees in an editorial on Sunday had Bronx Bomber executives accusing the broadsheet of hypocrisy and bias yesterday.
The Times editorial — which accused the Yankees of "acting like a superstar free agent and asking for the moon" in its plans for a new stadium — never mentioned that the Times Co. is a part-owner of the Boston Red Sox and has a substantial self-interest in stopping the Yankees from building a new, more profitable stadium.

A Yankee insider snickered, "The Gray Lady's Red Sox are showing."

The insider explained, "The better the Yankees do financially, the more money they'll have to pay the best players, and the more the Yankees will beat the Red Sox."

The Times may have been listening to other Major League owners, Yankees president Randy Levine said yesterday in an interview with PAGE SIX: "Not only were the facts cited in the editorial incorrect, but the arguments are similar to those emanating from rival teams worried about a new stadium rising in The Bronx."

For the record, the Yankees propose spending $800 million building a replica of Yankee Stadium with plenty of corporate boxes to generate higher profits. The team is asking the city/state to spend $300 million on a Metro-North station, an improved ferry terminal, and a parking garage that will more than pay for itself through fees.
