Changes Approved for the KKG New Member Program
Hi everyone:
Just thought you'd all like to read the following, which was printed in the most recent issue of The Key--I think you'll all be really pleased!!!!
"Due to feedback from undergraduate and alumna members, the New Member Task Force was appointed in January 2001 to study and evaluate KKG's New Member Program. The Task Force was comprised of 6 undergraduate members, three chapter advisers, two Fraternity Officers, and the Chapter Administrative Assistant serving as Chairperson.
"The Task Force reaffirmed the intent, rationaly, and direction of the New Member Program. KKG must continue to be a leader in the Greek world, encouraging academic excellence while combatting hazing.
"The Task Force has made the following recommendations to make the New Member Program more flexible, while preserving the integrity of the New Member Program.
(1) Chapters will have increased flexibility in adapting the length of the New Member Program to their chapter calendars
(2) Chapters will have greater flexibility with New Member Program workshop content.
(3) KORE groups may be re-structured to designate a "Big Sister" for each new member.
"The Fraternity Council has approved these 3 recommendation. New guidelines concerning the New Member Program will be available in the Fall chapter mailing, and the Director of Chapters' newsletter.
"Questions should be directed to Regional Directors of Chapters."
So, ladies... what do we all think about this? Sounds to me like Big/Little is back!!!!

I'm confused. Isn't that what we do now? I mean, I have a big "key sis" in my Kore. Is this referring to delayed matchings?

I am very excited about that headquarters is giving us the option to bring back Bigs. I thought that KORE was good but adding a "leader" such as a Big is a great idea so that there is someone that the new member can absolutely for that connection with. Anyways...this is great!

Hey--
I don't know about the specifics re: delayed matchings, but I bet we'll find out in the Fall.
If I had it my way, you'd get your Big when you were initiated, or maybe the week before (during Iweek).
When would you all like to see Bigs and Littles matched?

I agree with Katie, I think the bigs should be revealed at the end of the third week, and that whole week would be dedicated to big/lils. I think the third week is best because the first week they are just getting orientated to Kappa and it's already overwhelming, and the second week they feel more comfortable to meet more and more sisters, and by the third week both the sisters and the new members know who they feel really extra comfortable with. That's my feelings. I am really glad to hear about the big and little coming back, and I am glad to know that nationals took the time to make a task force, it's really great news!

I would like to see Bigs matched a couple of weeks into the new member program, to serve as a mentor. I just think it helps to have someone who is there for you to call up anytime to chat about Kappa, etc, someone who knows about the organization.

I was in one of the twelve chapters that originated the New Member program (go ZE!), and I must say, these ideas sound great. Our chapter really liked the shortened NM period, b/c we're on 10-week trimesters and that meant we no longer had to deal with a school break during the pledge period. We did NOT like the Kore thing. I was a sophomore when the NM program was initiated and my pledge class truly missed the demise of the big/little relationship. Big/lil week was always lots of fun and we were sad when the whole Kore thing started. We had big/lil matching about four weeks before initiation, but that was during the 12-week pledge period.
I think it's fabulous that you're including undergraduate members on this task force. It sounds like chapters will really benefit from the three ideas that you have so far.
