Why did you become greeklife?
I'm not sure if that's the correct way to ask the question because i'm not in a greeklife club. Why did you join your organization?
AmyCat why did you join your org? Did you have the freedom to choose the organization that interest you the most?

I joined my org because I felt inexticably drawn to it and several of my best friends were already members. And in the years since I became a member, I've met and befriended so many amazing, incredible women... Its a choice I've never second guessed. I love my org passionately.
Yes, I had the freedom to choose the org that interested me the most. I consider myself lucky for having that opportunity.

While I started My Own Local so as to affiliate with a National GLO, I have learned how much it really paid off.
1. All Of My Brothers From My Chapter.
2. Meeting so many GC Brothers at our General Assembly.
3. Meeting so many Brothers from Chapter visitations.
4. Meeting so may Brothers who were bidding on ebay.
If it were not for that, I would not have ment not only Brothers of LXA, but so many People from other GLOs such as on GC!
SKEETER, I hope this helped in a small way. There is a whole window of life that you may never know if you dont try.
I have been doing this for 40 Years and dont plan to quit!

Hi, I'd like to share my story on why I chose to affiliate with a GLO. When my oldest sister, who is 8 years older than me, went off to college, my family and I used to visit her frequently. Her sophomore year she rushed and became a sister of Chi Omega, evertime we'd visit her, the girls at the house always played with me and we're really nice, even took me with them to OU games. A couple years later, before she graduated her best friend, also a Chi O and a couple other sisters told me that they couldn't wait till the day that I would be a Chi O. By this time I was about 13. The whole idea of living with your friends, getting good grades, and helping people as they described it was always very intriguing to me. By my senior year in high school I started doing research about Sororities at the Universities I was applying to. I think I was definitely the only one of my friends that was thinking about such a thing. I did know a couple AKA's, A Delta, Kappa, Theta, and a few Chi Omegas, who we're friends of my sisters or were family members of friends, nonetheless the interest and fascination was always there.
Anyway, my Father died right before my Graduation so I decided to stay home and attend the local University, I went through Rush that Fall, but the Chi Omega chapter had already dissolved. It didnt take long, by the end of the first party, to realize that Zeta Tau Alpha was where I wanted and needed to be. I have the outmost respect for Chi Omega for everything that it stands for, the things I'm allowed to know and those I'm not. I've always known that everything happens for a reason with a 'purpose under the heavens', and I am forever grateful to be a sister of Zeta Tau Alpha.

Hmm..I am fairly certian that this thread was intended to be about what made you personally choose the greek organization that you did, and why you became greek in the first place. It was not intended to become the virtual playground for childish and catty behavior that I am certian that most of our founders would condemn, as I am positive that mine would. I suggest that if someone says something that grates on your nerves, to step up, be the bigger person, and just let it slide. Just as I will to the potentially nasty posts that will follow this one.
On topic, I chose to become greek after I saw my sister go greek at Maryland. Previously, I had all the standerd misconceptions, which were soon erased upon seeing the tight knit groups of girls residing in the ADPi house. While I had intentions of joining ADPi at Pitt when I went through rush, I felt more confortable and saw something closer to what my sister had, at the Theta Phi Alpha suite. The rest is history.

When I think back...I don't even remember why. It's hard to remember a time when Beta wasn't an important aspect of my life. Honestly I can't even remember if I really understood what fraternities and sororities are when I was in highschool.
I do remember rush a little and being excited and nervous about going through pledging...that's about it though.

ditto to your post TPArose. Maybe some people don't want to use the search function-get over it. But, then again I know all of those people are wrong .

I went through rush at my previous school when I was 18 anf fell in love with ZTA. However, the day of Pref parties, my mom called me in tears about my father's health and said that she would need me at home as often as I could be there. I didn't sign my Pref card.
Fast forward about 8 years later. I decided to go through recruitment at my present school, didn't receive a bid to an NPC group, and decided to look into Phi Chi, a local sorority that I heard wanted to affiliate with a national sorority. They were close knit, obviously loved each other, had been on campus for about 8 years, and were very sweet. I love my sisters, and will always look back on my experiences with Phi Chi with a lot of fond memories.

I joined b/c the guys were not like any of the other guys in other houses that were rushing me.
The other houses, which were still great in their own rights, seemed to, well, fake. You could kind of tell that while there were great things to boast. There were some things they felt they had to hide. There was even a guy at one rush BBQ for a pretty great house who I over heard someone say "why the **** did he come? Now we're not going to sign anyone" and then someone ran "interfereance". That house contradicted the "brotherhood" selling point.
But the Delts let it all hang out. They never took themselves too seriously. They had much to brag about and while they let you know that they had a lot going for them, they were humble and modest about it. The guys were hilarious and really fun to hang out with and genuinely wanted to get to know the rushees. It was like having 90 guys who all grew up together, really got along, and everyone felt like they belonged there. I felt like that was the place where I belonged too. Never looked back.
